The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its dominating play on its spring break trip, besting Hampden-Sydney College, 38th-ranked Franklin & Marshall College, and 39th-ranked Skidmore College each by a 7-0 score at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
CWRU has now won six straight matches, each by a 7-0 score, and improved to 13-4 overall this season.
The Spartans pulled out the doubles point against Franklin and Marshall in a set of close matches. At second doubles, junior Rohan Bhat and sophomore Derek Shiffer fell to Luke Brodsky and Soren Rudin-Aulenbach 6-2. The Spartans responded with a 6-3 win at no. 1 doubles from junior Anmay Devaraj and senior Casey Hishinuma over Zac Ashtiani and Gonzalo Gentou. The doubles point came down to the third match, where senior Ajay Mahenthiran and sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza trailed Samuel Donnelly and Campbell Gervais 5-4, but the CWRU duo rallied off three-straight games to win the match 7-5 and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Hishinuma extended the team's lead to 2-0 with a win at fifth singles over Rudin-Aulenbach, who retired after trailing 5-0. Junior Matthew Plunkett followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles over Carl Kamdin and Mahenthiran clinched the win for the Spartans with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Brodsky at no. 1 singles.
Adding to the win was sophomore George Kosseifi, who bested Ashtiani 6-3, 6-1 at no. 2 singles, Devaraj, who defeated Donnelly 6-3 (4), 6-1 at third singles, and Salazar Garza, who came out on top of Jack Gelman 6-4, 6-1 in the sixth singles match.
Franklin and Marshall dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
CWRU and Hampden-Sydney played the singles matches first in the Spartans' other morning contest on Tuesday. Senior Benjamin Martin was the first to finish, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 win at sixth singles against Jonathon Fogle. First-year Jon Totorica followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Dillon McReynolds at second singles, and first-year Rowan Matorin added a 6-4, 6-4 win against Barrett Foster at first singles to extend CWRU's lead to 3-0. Clinching the match for CWRU was sophomore Trey Lambright with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Taylor Fox.
Other singles wins in the match came from first-year Konrad Kwiatkowski (7-6 (4), 6-4 over Thomas Davis in the second singles match) and junior Justin Prochnow (4-6, 6-4, 13-11 over Emerson Rice in the fourth singles match).
The two teams went on to split the first two doubles matches to finish with Totorica and first-year Leon Chen defeating Casey Coffey and McReynolds 6-0 in the second singles match and Lambright and Bhat falling 6-4 to Foster and Davis at no. 1 doubles. However, Martin and Matorin clinched the doubles point for CWRU with a 6-3 win over Fox and Henry Singleton in the third doubles contest.
Hampden-Sydney fell to 3-4 following the setback to the Spartans.
Later in the day, CWRU swept each of the three doubles matches in its win over Skidmore. Chen and Totorica struck first with a 6-1 win over Adel Aissaoui and Nika Mori at second doubles, while Devaraj and Hishinuma clinched the point with a 6-3 victory in the first doubles match against Griffin Biernat and Yuval Goodman. At third doubles, Mahenthiran and Prochnow were able to pull out a 7-5 win against Kyle Lundberg and Harrison Gradin.
In singles play, Kosseifi bested Lundberg 6-1, 6-3 in the third match and Plunkett followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth singles against Aissaoui to put CWRU on the verge of clinching the victory. Hishinuma went on to provide the clinching win at fourth singles, besting Mori 6-4, 6-3 to give CWRU the team victory.
Other singles wins in the match came from Mahenthiran (6-4, 6-4 over Goodman at no. 1 singles), Devaraj (6-4, 5-7, 10-8 over Biernat at no. 2 singles), and Salazar Garza (6-4, 6-3 over William Goethlin at no. 6 singles).
The loss dropped Skidmore to 3-3 for the campaign.
The Spartans are slated to wrap up their spring break trip on Wednesday against 40th-ranked Carthage and Transylvania at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. match against 16th-ranked Kenyon College. Each of Wednesday's matches will be played at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Florida.
