The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked fifth in Division III, completed an undefeated Spring Break trip on Wednesday, concluding the week with 7-0 wins over 40th-ranked Carthage College and Transylvania University, and a 4-3 victory over 16th-ranked Kenyon College at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Florida.
CWRU wrapped up its spring break trip with a perfect 9-0 record, including 7-0 wins in eight of the nine contests. The Spartans stand at 16-4 overall for the campaign following Wednesday's wins.
In the afternoon match against Kenyon, the Spartans fell behind early after dropping two of the three doubles contests. Senior Ajay Mahenthiran and sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza dropped a 6-3 match at no. 3 doubles to Gianluca Bocanegra and Rishil Kondapaneni, but senior Casey Hishinuma and junior Anmay Devaraj evened the score with a 6-4 win at no. 1 doubles against Alejandro Gonzalez and Paulo Pocasangre. However, moments later Kenyon secured the doubles point with a 7-5 win in the second match from Joshua Finkle and Eric Zhang over juniors Rohan Bhat and Justin Prochnow.
The bottom of the Spartans' lineup helped to push the team back in front as Salazar Garza bested Zhang 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth singles match and Hishinuma claimed a 6-0, 6-4 win against Rakkan Audeh in the fifth singles match to put CWRU in front in the team score, 2-1. At second singles, sophomore George Kosseifi battled back after losing the first set 6-2 to Kondapaneni to win the next two 6-2, 6-0, and put the Spartans a victory away from clinching the win. Minutes later, junior Matthew Plunkett provided the clinching point with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Juozas Cioladis in the fourth singles match to lift the Spartans to the win.
CWRU dropped the two remaining singles matches in a second-set tiebreaker with Mahenthiran falling to Pocasangre 6-4, 7-6 (5) at no. 1 singles and Devaraj dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (3) contest to Gonzalez.
The loss was Kenyon's first of the season and the Owls fell to 8-1 for the campaign.
The Spartans opened the day with simultaneous matches against Carthage and Transylvania in the morning. The Carthage match started with singles play, as Mahenthiran put CWRU on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 2 singles over Myles Krzewinski and Salazar Garza followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles over Miles Whelan in the sixth singles match. At fifth singles, Hishinuma extended the team's lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Marco Czosnyka, and Kosseifi clinched the match at no. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Francisco Silveria. Plunkett added a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles over Finn Morris and Devaraj picked up a 7-6 (4), 6-2 triumph against Cyriac Cayuela in the third singles contest.
In doubles action, Salazar Garza and Mahenthiran claimed a 6-0 win in the third match over Diego Silva and Luca Okino and sophomore Trey Lambright, and Prochnow clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win against Elios Briand and Krzewinski at no. 1 doubles. At no. 2 doubles, Hishinuma and sophomore Derek Shiffer claimed a 6-3 win against Cooper Ferruzzi and Silveira.
Carthage fell to 6-4 with the loss.
CWRU was dominant again in doubles play against Transylvania, winning all three matches. Shiffer and first-year Jon Totorica were the first to finish, besting Jonathan Kepnes and Jordan Cordrey 6-1, and Prochnow and Bhat secured the doubles point for the Spartans with a 6-1 victory against Chase Moreman and Alejandro Perez. Adding a win at no. 3 doubles were Lambright and first-year Luke Saylor, who bested Jacob Jiranek and Jacob Cooper 6-2.
Totorica, playing at no. 1 singles, extended the CWRU lead to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Jiranek, and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph from first-year Rowan Matorin over Perez gave the Spartans a 3-0 advantage in the match. Shortly thereafter, first-year Konrad Kwiatkowski clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Moreman in the third singles match. Adding singles victories in the match were senior Ben Martin (6-3, 6-1 over Tobias Mandeville at no. 4 singles), Bhat (6-0, 6-0 over Kepnes at no. 5 singles), and first-year Leon Chen (6-2, 6-0 over Luke Earlywine at no. 6 singles).
