No. 5 Spartans Earn 7-0 Wins over #21 W&L, Hobart

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team, ranked fifth in Division III, secured a pair of 7-0 wins at the Ohio Invitational on Saturday, besting 21st-ranked Washington & Lee University in the early match before claiming a victory against Hobart College in the second contest of the day.

The Spartans improved to 18-4 overall with the two wins and have run their winning streak to 11 consecutive matches. CWRU won all six doubles matches and each of the 12 singles contests on Saturday.

In the opening match against Washington & Lee, senior Ajay Mahenthiran and junior Justin Prochnow claimed a 6-1 win over Heys Parker and Eli Hirshberg in the third doubles match, and junior Anmay Devaraj and senior Casey Hishinuma followed with a 6-1 win over Evan Erb and Will Kistler at no. 1 doubles to secure the doubles point for the Spartans. First-years Jon Totorica and Leon Chen completed the sweep of the doubles matches with a 6-2 win over Ryan Good and James Kurani.

Junior Matthew Plunkett registered the first singles win of the day for the Spartans, besting Sahil Arora 6-1, 6-1 at no. 4 singles. At nearly the same time, Hishinuma bested Parker 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth singles match, and sophomore George Kosseifi claimed a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kistler in the second singles match to put CWRU in front 4-0 and clinch the team win.

Adding on to the victory were sophomore Santiago Salazar Garza with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Sanjheev Rao at sixth singles and Devaraj with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Kurani at third singles. Capping off the sweep for the Spartans, Mahenthiran pulled out a thrilling three-set win over Erb in the no. 1 singles match. After dropping the first set 6-2, he battled back to win the second set 7-5 and pulled out a 15-13 marathon super set win to clinch the match and the 7-0 CWRU win.

Washington & Lee fell to 10-4 with the loss.

CWRU continued to roll against Hobart, once again claiming wins in each of the three doubles contests. Hishinuma and Mahenthiran were the first to finish, besting Jacob Linares and Troy Steiner 6-1 in the third match. Chen and Totorica followed with a 6-3 win over Nick Grosso and Nicholas Fischer at no. 1 doubles to clinch the point and at no. 2 doubles, junior Rohan Bhat and Devaraj defeated Rahul Vallabhajosula and Hyat Oyer 7-5.

In singles play, Mahenthiran bested Oyer 6-3, 7-6 (5) at no. 1 singles, Kosseifi claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win against Fischer at no. 2 singles, and Plunkett defeated Grosso 6-2, 6-1 at no. 3 singles. Rounding out the day, Hishinuma earned a 6-2, 6-0 win against Vallabhajosula at fourth singles, Totorica defeated Linares 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles, and first-year Konrad Kwiatkowski was triumphant over Steiner in the sixth singles match, 6-0, 6-1.

Hobart dropped to 4-5 with the setback.

CWRU will complete play at the Ohio Invitational against 10th-ranked Washington University (Mo.) at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.

Spartan Notes

  • CWRU has now claimed 14 of its 18 wins this season by 7-0 scores. The Spartans have won 10 of the matches during their current 11-game streak by a 7-0 score.

  • The Spartans improved to 7-2 against nationally ranked Division III teams with the win against Washington & Lee on Saturday.

  • CWRU improved to 206-70 (.746) in singles matches and to 88-41 (.682) in doubles play this year.

  • With their singles wins on Saturday, Hishinuma and Mahenthiran are now each 82-22 in singles play for their careers, tying them with former Spartan James Hopper for the fourth-most singles wins in program history.
