The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team won one of its three bouts at the Yellow Jacket Duals on Friday night at the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio, defeating Wilmington College 45-7 after falling to 20th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University 31-15 and Division II UNC Pembroke 35-12.
The Spartans dropped to 2-2 in dual matches with the Quakers falling to 0-7, the Yellow Jackets improving to 2-3, and the Braves improving to 7-3.
Stats and Standouts
UNC Pembroke 35, CWRU 12
- Martinez gave CWRU a 6-5 lead with a pin in 2:13
- Keane followed with a 7-6 decision at 141 pounds, increasing the Spartan edge to four, 9-5
- Pembroke won the next three bouts
- Crutchley broke the drought with a 5-4 decision at 174 pounds, making the score 20-12
- The Braves won the final three matches to win the dual
#20 Baldwin Wallace 31, CWRU 15
- Alizio started the match with a fall in 4:15, his fifth pin of the season
- Martinez followed with a 6-1 decision over Dorian Hoffman, the second-ranked wrestler in the region at a weight class lower
- Back-to-back pins gave BW the lead
- Gassel secured a pin at 197 pounds in 1:47, his second of the year, to decrease the Spartan deficit to 28-15
CWRU 45, Wilmington 7
- The Spartans won the first three matches by fall with Alizio winning in 1:22, Martinez in 22 seconds, and Keane in 3:58
- Wilmington cut the deficit to 11, 18-7 with a pair of wins
- An 8-3 decision by senior Justin Sweeney at 165 pounds extended the team's lead and a forfeit and pin by the Spartans secured the victory
- Junior Mathew Gummere earned a win by fall in 3:52 at 184 pounds and Gassel added a pin in 1:53
Spartan Notes
- Greene Barrios recorded a pin, his third of the season, and a technical fall, his first of the campaign and the second in his career
- Babic added a pin in extra matches, his fourth of the year
- Conover also recorded a pin, the third of the 2025-26 season
- Martinez improved to a team-best 14-1 with the three wins, including five pins and four technical falls
- 22 wrestlers competed for CWRU on Friday
