Eight members of the Case Western Reserve University football team were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team based on their athletic and academic achievements over the 2024 season and the course of their careers. Players who received the honor included junior defensive back Osi Chukwuocha, senior defensive back Nate Cikalo, senior wide receiver Noah Coyne, graduate student defensive lineman AJ Dudowski, senior quarterback Alex Fromberg, junior offensive lineman Owen Myer, senior offensive lineman Tony Thivener, and graduate student linebacker Gabe Troch.
The Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. Players honored were selected by their school's Sports Information Directors and must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average. A maximum of eight student-athletes from each school can be nominated.
Among the CWRU Academic All-Region honorees, Coyne, Dudowski, Fromberg, Myer, and Thivener were each chosen as CSC Academic All-America finalists and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced at noon on Tuesday, January 28.
This was the third straight season that both Cikalo and Coyne have been named to the Academic All-District Team, while Dudowski and Fromberg received the honor for the second consecutive year. Chukwuocha, Myer, Thivener, and Troch each claimed Academic All-District acclaim for the first time in their careers.
Chukwuocha, a mechanical engineering major with a 3.805 cumulative GPA, was an All-PAC Second Team honoree in 2024 after a breakout campaign at cornerback in 2024. He started all 10 games for the Spartans at the position and finished the year with 37 tackles, a team-high two interceptions, six pass breakups, and one quarterback hurry.
Cikalo secured All-PAC honors for the third straight season, earning an honorable mention to the league's team. He totaled 45 tackles (21 solo) with 3.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and a quarterback hurry in 2024. Cikalo is majoring in mechanical engineering and has a 3.657 cumulative grade point average.
Coyne played in all 10 games for the Spartans this year, leading the team with 58 catches and 11 touchdowns and totaling 765 receiving yards, the second-most among CWRU receivers in 2024. He was named to the All-PAC Second Team, marking the second consecutive season he has claimed all-conference honors. Coyne is a finance major with a 3.767 cumulative GPA.
Dudowski, a mechanical and aerospace engineering major with a 3.607 cumulative GPA, turned in a career year in 2024, starting all 10 games at defensive end and leading the team with 65 tackles, including 27 solo. His 7.5 tackles for loss were the second-most among Spartan players during the year and his 2.5 sacks ranked third on the team. In addition, he led all Spartans with four quarterback hurries, two fumbles recovered, and two forced fumbles. He was an All-PAC honoree for the second straight year, securing a spot on the First Team.
Fromberg, an All-PAC honorable mention, finished the campaign 40th in DIII in passing efficiency (165.0), 29th in yards per game (256.4) and per completion (14.43), and 35th in total offense (271.8). He completed 63.5% of his passes for 2,308 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Fromberg is a business information technology major with a 3.772 cumulative GPA.
Myer is an aerospace engineering major with a 3.524 cumulative GPA. He was a key piece of the Spartans' offensive line, starting all nine games he appeared in at right tackle and helping hold opponents to just 1.3 sacks per game over the campaign, the fourth-lowest mark in the league, while the team's 440.0 yards of offense per game ranked 34th in Division III and third among PAC teams. Myer was individually responsible for just one sack during the year and was selected to the All-PAC Second Team.
Thivener, who started all 10 games at center for the Spartans in 2024, was named to the D3football.com All-Region Third Team and the All-PAC First Team in 2024. Before the season, he made the transition from guard to center and went on to allow just one individual sack during the year. Thivener is a business major with a 3.746 GPA.
Troch, a finance major at CWRU with a 3.641 undergraduate and a 4.0 graduate GPA, completed the 2024 season second on the team with 58 tackles (22 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, and three quarterback hurries. Included in that was a nine-tackle effort with one sack in the Academic Bowl against Carnegie Mellon last Saturday. He was named an honorable mention to the All-PAC Team following the season.
The Spartans finished the 2024 season with a 6-4 overall record, good for fifth place in the final PAC standings. It was the ninth consecutive winning season for CWRU.
