The Case Western Reserve University football team overcame a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit behind three touchdowns in the final frame from senior quarterback Sam DeTillio, as the Spartans (3-1, 1-1 PAC) claimed a 36-29 win over Westminster College (1-3, 1-1 PAC) in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon.

Making the first start of his collegiate career, senior Pierce Olsen completed 23-of-36 passes for 232 yards with one touchdown and an interception, while rushing for an additional 11 yards and a score.

DeTillio provided a complement to Olsen at the quarterback position in goal-line situations, carrying the ball four times for seven yards and three touchdowns, all in the fourth quarter.

Junior wide receiver Will Stack was Olsen's top target, catching six passes for 54 yards, while senior Beau Wolf added four catches for 38 yards, and sophomore Julian Dahlem added the first two catches of his career for 44 yards.

Junior running back Andy Kavcic carried the ball 25 times for 79 yards, giving him 569 rushing yards over the first four games of the campaign.

Junior Jake Kavcic led the defensive effort with 10 tackles (seven solo), a forced fumble, and three pass breakups.

Sophomore Dominic Ghilani added four solo tackles, including one sack, while forcing one fumble and recovering two.

First Quarter

Olsen led the Spartans on a 13-play, 80-yard drive on the opening drive of the game, completing six-of-seven pass attempts for 53 yards and scoring on a six-yard run to put CWRU ahead 7-0 with 7:50 left in the opening period.

The Titans drove into the red zone on their first drive of the game, but the Spartans stopped the drive at the four-yard line and held Westminster to a field goal with 18 seconds left in the quarter, setting the score at 7-3 by the end of the period.
Second Quarter

With 4:01 left in the half, Jake Kavcic forced a fumble that was recovered by Ghilani at the Spartans' 44-yard line.

Olsen followed with a 30-yard strike to senior Garrett Pavlick on the first play of the ensuing drive, and six plays later, found sophomore Will Maisenbacher in the end zone with a nine-yard touchdown pass to extend the Spartans' lead to 14-3 with 1:43 on the clock.

Westminster added a field goal late in the period to cut the CWRU advantage to 14-6 by the end of the second half.

Olsen finished the first half with 15 completions on 21 attempts for 136 yards, and Jake Kavcic led the team defensively in the opening half with six tackles (four solo) and a forced fumble.
Third Quarter

Westminster's Isaac Smalls returned the opening kickoff of the second half 85 yards to the CWRU 15-yard line, and Quentin Goode found Eduardo Torres for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage of the period, cutting the Spartans' lead to a point, 14-13.

Goode threw another touchdown pass with 7:08 left in the third, but the Titans were unsuccessful on their two-point conversion attempt, taking a 19-14 lead over the Spartans.

Westminster added to their lead with a 98-yard touchdown run from Jayveerh White with 2:11 left in the third, going in front 26-14.
Fourth Quarter

An interception early in the fourth quarter led to a Westminster field goal, increasing the Titans' lead to 29-14 with 13:52 to play in the game.

CWRU responded with a 12-play, 73-yard drive, with DeTillio scoring on a one-yard run with 8:17 left. Olsen was able to convert the two-point conversion on a pass to sophomore Aaron Alexander, making it a seven-point game, 29-22.

On the first play from scrimmage on the next drive, junior Tim Gonakis forced a fumble, and Ghilani recovered the ball for a second time on the day, giving CWRU possession back at the Westminster 47-yard line.

CWRU was able to even the score on the ensuing drive, with Olsen accounting for 30 passing yards and DeTillio notching a two-yard run into the end zone with 4:32 left to tie the score at 29-29.

The Spartans' defense forced a punt on Westminster's next drive and started their own drive at midfield. Andy Kavcic would carry the ball five times for 33 yards, putting CWRU at the goal line, and DeTillio carried it in from there for his third touchdown of the quarter, putting the Spartans' back ahead by a touchdown, 35-29, with 1:03 to play.

The Titans reached the Spartans' side of the field on their final drive of the game, but CWRU's defense held them, forcing a turnover on downs at the 37-yard line with 24 seconds left, and the Spartans were able to kneel on the ball to run out the clock for the victory.
