The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team celebrated Senior Day against 12th-ranked Baldwin Wallace University on Friday night at the Veale Center in Cleveland.
The Spartans dropped the contest 49-0, falling to 1-6 on the season. The Yellow Jackets improved to 11-4 with the win.
Prior to the dual, the Spartans celebrated their two graduating members as part of Senior Day. Seniors Calvin Cai and Cole Mullenix were honored during the ceremony for their years of dedication to the program.
Mullenix, competing at 285 pounds, wrestled in the most competitive match of the day, losing by decision, 2-0 to Benjamin DeGuzman.
In extra matches, first-year Alexander Greene Barrios pinned Kiernan Magee in 1:27 at 133 pounds. It was his fifth win by fall this season. At 141 pounds, sophomore Mike Valerino won by fall in 5:00 over Keegan McMahon for his fifth pin of the season and the 16th of his career.
The CWRU wrestling team will turn its attention next to the prestigious Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational, hosted by Wheaton College in Illinois. Action at the two-day meet begins on Friday, January 31 at 12 p.m. ET.
Spartan Notes
- The dual featured 10 regionally ranked wrestlers and five nationally ranked wrestlers by the NWCA.
- For the Spartans, three wrestlers appeared in the top eight of the Region V rankings and one, junior Art Martinez, appeared in the top 15 nationally.
- The Yellow Jackets had seven wrestlers compete on Saturday who were ranked in the top eight of Region IV, including four who appeared in the number one spot
