The 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University volleyball team lost to 18th-ranked Marietta College in three sets, 12-15, 9-25, 23-25, on Saturday afternoon at Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta, Ohio.
The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 12-1, while the Pioneers remained undefeated in 2024, improving to 10-0.
Senior Rea Marfatia led CWRU with 11 kills and six digs, and junior Amanda Ngo put down seven kills without an error on 13 attacks for a .538 hitting percentage. Senior Carly Scott directed the offense with 14 assists. Defensively, first-year Avery Basinger matched Marfatia with six digs with first-year Sophia Datto adding five.
Trailing by five early in the third set, the Spartans rallied, eventually tying the score at 16 in the middle of a 6-1 run. An attacking error gave the team its first lead in the set at 17-16, and Ngo reclaimed an 18-17 advantage for CWRU with a kill two points later. The Spartans led 23-21 before the hosts won the final four points of the set to claim the match.
Marietta led by as many as 15 points in the first set, holding the advantage throughout the period. CWRU held a brief 2-1 lead in the second set before the Pioneers took the lead and pulled away with a pair of long runs in the stanza.
The Spartans will look to rebound when they return to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Tuesday, September 24 to face Heidelberg at 7 p.m.
