No. 21 Spartans Sweep Heidelberg on Tuesday Night

The 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve University volleyball team responded to its first loss of the season by sweeping Heidelberg University 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 on Tuesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 13-1 with the win, while the Student Princes fell to 7-8.

Junior Amanda Ngo had 11 kills with just one attacking error, hitting .556 in the match. She added a team-high four total blocks, including one solo. Senior Rea Marfatia paced the squad with 13 kills and contributed eight digs, and first-year Sophia Datto led the Spartans with 16 digs.

Trailing by two early in the first set, the Spartans used a 5-2 run to claim the lead. Heidelberg reclaimed the advantage and led 13-12 before CWRU won six of the next seven points to hold an 18-14 edge. Ngo had two kills during the 6-1 run with junior Kalli Wall and senior Chloe Maciejewski each adding one. Case Western Reserve did not trail for the rest of the set, claiming the first stanza with a service ace from senior Lily Crouch.

Trailing 10-8 in the second set, CWRU won six of the next seven points to secure a 14-11 advantage. Ahead by just two later in the set, a service error by the Student Princes, kill by Ngo, and block by Ngo and Wall increased the Spartan lead to five, 20-15. The teams traded the next six points, and Crouch ended the set for the second time, delivering a kill to put CWRU ahead 2-0 in the match.

A 10-3 run early in the third set gave the hosts a 13-5 lead, helping them secure a wire-to-wire victory in the third stanza. Heidelberg cut its deficit to five, but four consecutive Spartan points on the service of senior Jolie Held increased the Case Western Reserve advantage to nine. A kill by Wall put the Spartans up 11, 23-12, but five Heidelberg points in a row cut into the lead. Maciejewski buried a kill to put the hosts a point away from clinching, and Ngo finished the match with her 11th kill of the night to secure the sweep.

The Spartans will begin conference play this weekend, heading to New York for the first University Athletic Association round robin of the season. CWRU faces Rochester at 1 p.m. on Saturday followed by #8 WashU at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Case Western Reserve will play #7 Emory at 12 p.m. with all three matches hosted by New York University in the John A.
