CWRU Men’s Tennis Preps for ITAs at Youngstown State & John Carroll

The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team continued its fall schedule at a pair of tournaments this weekend, sending the squad to the Youngstown State Invitational and the John Carroll Invitational.

CWRU players came out on top of the doubles draw and two of the three singles draws at the YSU Invitational while facing Division I competition from host Youngstown State, Duquesne, and LeMoyne. Seniors Casey Hishinuma and Ajay Mahenthiran went 4-0 together to claim the doubles draw title, besting Duquesne's Arnau Anton Garcia and Uvan Patel 8-7 (0) in the championship match.

Sophomore George Kosseifi continued his strong run of play in the fall, winning the 'B' singles draw with an 8-5 win over sophomore teammate Santiago Salazar Garza in the final match. First-year Rowan Matorin claimed a win in the 'C' draw, besting junior teammate Rohan Bhat 6-3, 6-2 in the final match.

Senior Ansh Shah won his first three matches of the weekend to make the finals of the 'A' draw before suffering a 7-5, 6-0 setback to Onder Balci of Youngstown State to finish as the runner-up.

CWRU players went a combined 18-7 in singles matches and 9-4 in doubles play at the tournament.

Meanwhile, at John Carroll on Saturday, nine Spartans combined to go 14-0 in singles matches and 7-1 in doubles play, with the lone doubles loss coming in a match between CWRU pairings.

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, as the team will send Mahenthiran, Hishinuma, Shah, junior Anmay Devaraj, Kosseifi, and Salazar Garza to the ITA Fall Regional Championship at WashU in St. Louis, Missouri, while the rest of the squad will head to the Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
