#4 Spartans Pick Up Friday Wins against #28 Kenyon & Otterbein

The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches with two victories on Friday afternoon, defeating 28th-ranked Kenyon College 7-2 and Otterbein University 9-0 at the Medical Mutual Tennis Center in Cleveland.

CWRU now stands at 18-4 overall on the season with the wins, including an 8-2 mark against ranked Division III opponents.

The Spartans started the day strong, sweeping all three doubles matches from Kenyon. Seniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang defeated Rishil Kondapaneni and Eric Zhang 8-2 at third doubles to give CWRU a 1-0 lead and senior Sahil Dayal and sophomore Anmay Devaraj added an 8-2 win at no. 2 doubles against Alejandro Gonzalez and Eliezer Gonzalez to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage. Graduate student Diego Maza and senior Vishwa Aduru capped off the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles against Gianluca Bocanegra and Paulo Pocasangre.

Junior Ansh Shah was the first Spartan to collect a win in singles play, besting Bocanegra 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth singles match. Minutes later, Maza clinched the team victory for the Spartans with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Rakkan Audeh at sixth singles.

A 6-1, 7-5 win from junior Casey Hishinuma at fifth singles expanded the CWRU lead to 6-0. The Owls went on to claim back-to-back victories with a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 win by Kondapaneni over Aduru at second singles and a 6-4, 7-5 triumph from Alejandro Gonzalez over graduate student Michael Sutanto at third singles. However, junior Ajay Mahenthiran capped off the match with a come-from-behind 3-6, 7-6 (1), 10-6 win against Pocasangre in the first singles match.

Kenyon dropped to 5-6 with the loss.

CWRU continued its strong doubles play against Otterbein with Shah and French defeating Max Fickas and Neil Reddy 8-2 at no. 1 doubles, Sutanto and Narang besting Joshua Mammen and Jake Chilcote 8-2 at no. 2 doubles, and first-year Santiago Salazar Garza and sophomore Rohan Bhat winning 8-1 over Nikita Kitaev and Dylan Shook at no. 3 doubles.

In singles play, first-year Trey Lambright put the team ahead 4-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Nate Stevens in the sixth match, and first-year Derek Shiffer clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kitaev in the fifth singles match. Adding on singles wins against Otterbein were first-year Matthew Plunkett (6-2, 6-2 against Fickas at no. 1 singles), first-year George Kosseifi (6-2, 6-3 against Mammen at no. 2 singles), Salazar Garza (6-0, 6-3 against Chilcote at no. 4 singles), and junior Ben Martin (6-3, 6-1 over Reddy at no. 4 singles).

Otterbein dropped to 5-5 with the loss.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Saturday, hosting the 41st-ranked University of Rochester at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio at 6:00 p.m.
