Case Western Reserve University first-year vaulter Holly Schreiber broke the school record in the pole vault for the second consecutive week as the CWRU men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at the George Gauthier Track in Delaware, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday.
Schreiber cleared 3.66 meters to set the program record in the event for the second consecutive week. At last weekend's Marv Frye Invitational at the same venue, she cleared 3.61 meters to break a five-year-old program best. Schreiber placed third in the event on Saturday.
Overall, the Case Western Reserve women's team placed third out of 12 schools in Delaware, Ohio, with 104 points, trailing only Ohio Northern (146 points) and host Ohio Wesleyan (132 points). The Spartan men's team had the second-most points of the 12 schools competing, scoring 97.5 points. CWRU trailed only Otterbein, who scored 138.5 points.
The Spartan men's team swept the relays, with the 4x100-meter relay of graduate student Keith Cartwright, senior Brett Callow, sophomore Josh Bates, and graduate student Juan Perez placing first in 41.95 seconds, and the 4x400-meter relay of Bates, first-years Jeremiah Broughton and Joel Jones, and senior Yusuf Shaaban crossing the line first at 3:19.63.
Perez and Callow both placed in the top five in the 100-meter dash. Perez finished second with a finals time of 10.86 seconds, 0.03 seconds slower than his time in the prelims, and Callow placed fourth in 11.06 seconds, just 0.01 seconds behind his prelim time. He added a runner-up finish in the 200-meter dash in 22.05 seconds.
In the hurdling events, Shaaban placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.98 seconds, and graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.63 seconds. Rounding out the top-five finishes on the track was first-year Jacob Slater, who earned bronze in the 5,000-meter run after crossing the line at 15:21.66.
In the field, first-year Tanush Anand placed third in a pair of jumping events. He had the third-best mark in the triple jump of 12.98 meters, and he cleared the third-highest bar in the high jump at 1.94 meters. Cartwright placed third in the javelin throw with a heave of 47.21 meters, and a pair of Spartans, sophomore Anthony DeCarlo and junior Quaylen Lamarre posted top-five marks in the pole vault. DeCarlo finished third after clearing 4.28 meters, and Lamarre placed fifth by clearing 4.13 meters.
For the women's team, senior Adrienne Wachtman won two events, placing first in both the javelin and discus throws. Wachtman heaved the javelin 37.68 meters and tossed the discus 38.85 meters to record the best mark in each event. Sophomore Madison Martinez placed fifth in the javelin with a toss of 31.62 meters. In a third throwing event, senior Ailean Duffie had the fourth-furthest toss in the hammer throw of 46.68 meters.
In the triple jump, senior Emily Hopkins and junior Sarah Ozeki placed third and fourth, respectively, by bounding 10.91 meters and 10.61 meters.
On the track, CWRU earned top-five finishes in seven events. Sophomore Arianna Holbrook was the runner-up in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:19.29; she was followed by junior Marquis Globokar, who placed fourth in 2:22.36. Holbrook, Globokar, sophomore Melanie Taylor and senior Jessica Kwasny placed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:08.41.
Also in the distance events, sophomore Julia Hluck finished fourth in the 1500-meter run in 4:54.41.
Among the sprinters, sophomore Grace Misiunas recorded the best finish, placing third in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.67 seconds. Both Taylor and senior Elise Moore finished fifth in their events: Taylor in the 400-meter dash in 1:01.29 and Moore in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.37. The 4x100-meter relay of Hopkins, Moore, Ozeki, and Misiunas placed fifth in 51.32 seconds.
The CWRU track and field teams also sent distance runners to the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University at the Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday and Sunday.
Sophomore Lauren Iagnemma ran the fourth-fastest time in program history in the invitational section of the 5,000-meter run, completing the race in 17:15.05 to place 26th. It was the fastest time by a Spartan since Justine Jeroski recorded a mark of 17:14.95 in 2011.
In the unseeded 5,000-meter run, senior Stephen Henry placed 19th with a time of 15:23.19. Junior Nate Gilbert placed 57th in the unseeded 1500-meter run in 4:08.90, and senior Grace Jackson finished 63rd in the 1500-meter run invitational section with a time of 4:45.35. Jackson added a time of 2:22.59 in the 800-meter run invitational.
First-year Seth Tivakaran placed 52nd in the 800-meter run invitational with a time of 1:54.38. Gilbert placed 57th in the event in 1:54.66.
Next week, the Spartans will make the short trip to Berea, Ohio, for the 54th Annual Sparky Adams Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday, April 20.
