Junior Aidan Nathan of the Case Western Reserve University men's track and field team earned the first All-University Athletic Association honor of his career on the first day of the 2024 UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by New York University at the Armory Track and Field Center in Manhattan, New York, on Saturday.
Nathan placed second in the 5,000-meter run in 14:29.54 to record his first-ever top three finish at the conference championship meet. He finished behind former Spartan Jack Begley, who won the conference title in 14:28.49. It is the third consecutive year a CWRU runner has earned All-UAA honors in the event and the best finish by a Spartan since Sam Merriman placed first in 2018.
In the 800-meter run, first-year Seth Tivakaran set a program record with a time of 1:54.74, besting the previous record of 1:55.00 run by Joe Ledger in 2016. Tivakaran placed 10th in the race. He joined classmates Jacob Slater and Nico Matt and junior Luke Kishna for the distance medley relay, helping the Spartans place fifth in 10:31.02.
Two members of the Case Western Reserve men's team scored points in field events. Senior Yusuf Shaaban tied for seventh in the high jump by clearing 1.88 meters, and first-year Toby Langsner placed eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 12.77 meters.
In preliminary heats, four Spartans booked their tickets to the finals on Sunday. In the 60-meter hurdles, graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna recorded the fourth-fastest time of 8.52 seconds, and sophomore Joshua Park ran the sixth-best time of 8.72 seconds to each qualify for the final.
Senior Brett Callow had the eighth-best time in the 60-meter dash, earning a spot in the final with a time of 7.18 seconds. Finally, graduate student Keith Cartwright recorded the seventh-fastest time in the 200-meter dash of 22.47 seconds.
After one day of competition and five completed events, CWRU ranks fifth in the conference standings with 14.5 points. Carnegie Mellon is first with 65.0 points, followed by the University of Chicago with 39.5 points, Emory with 39.0 points, and WashU with 30.0 points. Trailing the Spartans are NYU with 4.0 points and Brandeis with 2.0 points.
The UAA Indoor Track and Field Championships conclude on Sunday with action starting at 10 a.m.
