The Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team was back in action on Friday night, placing fourth out of 14 Division III teams at the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Open at the Elvin R. King Cross Country Course in Cedarville, Ohio.
The Spartans, who were competing at the 8K distance for the first time this season, finished with 133 points in the Division III standings, finishing behind only Ohio Northern (69), Otterbein (108), and John Carroll (109).
Leading the way for the Spartans was junior Aidan Nathan, who finished 31st out of 464 total runners and 10th among Division III competitors with a time of 25:44.58. He was followed by junior Nate Gilbert in 56th place with a mark of 26:03.59, while first-year Jacob Slater crossed the line in 60th place with a mark of 26:06.05. Rounding out the team's top-five finishers were junior Mike Lombardi, who was 70th with a time of 26:14.20, and sophomore Solomon Greene, who notched a career-best 8K time of 26:4.11 and placed 110th overall.
First-year Finn Bonner was 111th overall (26:44.79) and junior Luke Kishna recorded a career-best 8K time of 26:58.40 to place 138th and complete the team's top-seven.
Other finishers for the Spartans on Friday included first-year Seth Tivakaran (145th, 27:04.16), senior Matthew Smutny (147th, 27:04.55), first-year Praveen Sureshkumar (187th, 27:38.55), first-year Angel Zeferino (211th, 28:00.98), sophomore Danny Becker (236th, 28:20.89), junior Victor Nash (277th, 28:49.30), and first-year Reese Cardella (305th, 29:17.01).
Findlay's Noah Fisher won the overall race with a time of 24:14.24, while Wilmington's Simon Heys was the top-finishing Division III runner with a time of 24:27.37.
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, traveling to Newville, Pennsylvania (the site of the 2023 NCAA Division III Championships) for the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational. The men's 8K race is slated to start at 10:30 a.m.
