Box Score The Case Western Reserve University baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland with an 18-7 win in seven innings over DePauw University.
The Spartans end the regular season with a record of 27-13, while the Tigers end their season at 12-26.
Senior catcher Jack Anderson drove in a season-high five runs on two hits, including a triple, sophomore right fielder Nick Harms drove in four runs, and senior shortstop Owen Levinson had three hits and scored a run. The Spartans scored at least 10 runs for the 16th time this season and 11th time in their last 13 games.
CWRU started the game with an 11-run inning, capped by a three-run home run by Harms. The first eight Spartans reached base as the home team sent 15 batters to the plate in the frame. Harms drove in the first run after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and back-to-back walks by senior center fielder Trey Haley and senior designated hitter RJ Christie made the score 3-0. Senior first baseman Nick Talarico drove in a pair of runs with a double down the left field line, the first hit of the game for the Spartans.
A single by Anderson brought in another run, and first-year second baseman Jasiah Harris drove in the eighth run with a groundout. Following a walk, Harms delivered a majestic drive to right field to give Case Western Reserve an 11-0 advantage. The home run was the 10th of the season for Harms, putting him in sole possession of second place on the single-season program home run leaderboard. Former Spartan Rocco Maue holds the program record with 11 homers during the 2018 season. Harms' 19 career home runs are fourth most in program history, four behind the record of 22 set by Gordon Daily (1997-2000) and Steve Rosiek (1986-88).
The 11 runs in the first are the most runs in a single inning for the CWRU baseball team since it scored 15 in the fifth inning on April 21 at Brandeis.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spartans scored a pair of runs on sacrifice flies driven in by senior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie and Anderson.
DePauw scored a run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth on a three-run home run by Cameron Macon to make the score 13-4. The Tigers added three runs in the sixth inning cutting their deficit to just six, 13-7.
Anderson drove in two more runs for the Spartans with a triple in the sixth inning and later scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to nine, 16-7. A two-run single by Carinci in the seventh inning ended the game by giving CWRU a lead of more than 10 runs.
Graduate student left-handed pitcher Evan Faxon (5-3) earned the win, allowing four earned runs in five innings while striking out six and walking three. A parade of three senior relievers followed Faxon on the hill for CWRU. Right-hander Cooper Schmidt threw two thirds of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits, left-hander Jonathan Simon retired the only batter he faced, and right-hander Sankalp Doshi pitched a perfect seventh inning.
Anderson, Talarico, and junior third baseman Zack Carinci each collected two hits in the contest, and Christie drew a career high three walks. With his double in the third inning, Carinci extended his program record hitting streak to 31 games.
Prior to the contest, CWRU celebrated its 11 graduating team members—Anderson, Christie, Doshi, Faxon, Haley, Flynn Lenahan, Levinson, Mackenzie, Schmidt, Simon, and Talarico—prior to the game as part of its Senior Day celebration. Each of the 11 seniors and graduate students appeared in the game.
With the end of the regular season, the Spartans, who were ranked fourth in Region VII last Wednesday, will await their postseason fate with the seventh-toughest schedule in Division III. The NCAA selection show is scheduled for Monday, May 15.
