The magical run at the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships continued into the individual championships for the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team as both Spartan singles players and each of the two doubles teams in the draw reached the quarterfinals and remained alive in the tournament after the first day of play on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru each won a pair of singles matches and paired together to claim a win in their doubles contest. In addition, seniors Diego Maza and Chris Provenzano opened doubles play with a win as well. By virtue of winning a first-round match at the NCAA Championship, all four locked in all-America honors for the 2022-23 season.
Hopper, who is the top-seeded player in the singles draw, defeated Joshua Bode of Concordia (Texas) 6-4, 6-4 in the first round and went on to claim a 6-2, 6-4 win over Caleb Wilkins of Chapman in the second round.
Hopper will face Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals on Friday at 11:00 a.m.
Aduru, seeded eighth in the draw, defeated Gustavus Adolphus' Nick Aney in the first round in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. He then went on to earn a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 win over Sewanee's Jordan Theron in the second round, coming from behind after trailing 4-2 in the third set.
Aduru will take on Aiden Drover-Mattinen of RPI at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the quarterfinals.
Doubles action was delayed shortly after the start due to rain, but both CWRU pairings were able to claim wins after a long break. Hopper and Aduru, the top-seeded pairing, pulled off a 6-4, 7-5 (5) win against Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples of Bowdoin. The Spartans' duo will now face Emory's Ryan Glanville and Charlie James in the quarterfinals at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The meeting will be a rematch from the UAA Championship semifinals, which Hopper and Aduru won 8-5.
Maza and Provenzano claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win against Washington College's Karl Hoegstedt and Andre-Remi Jakobi in the first round on Thursday night. Next up for the duo will be a quarterfinals matchup against fourth-seeded Nick Aney and Daniel Fouchier of Gustavus Adolphus at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
