The Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team placed fifth at the two-day 2023 University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Brandeis University at the Gosman Center in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Sunday.
CWRU placed fifth in the conference out of seven teams with 33.33 points. WashU won the conference title with 194 points bested Chicago, who finished second with 190 points.
The Spartans scored in six events on Sunday. Sophomore hurdler/jumper Sarah Ozeki recorded the best finish by an individual for CWRU on Sunday, placing fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.07 meters. The 4x400-meter relay of junior sprinter Elise Moore, senior runner Danielle Sarno, junior runner Jessica Kwasny, and first-year runner Melanie Taylor also placed fifth in 4:05.87.
First-year hurdler/jumper Grace Misiunas placed seventh in the final of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.26 seconds. She qualified for the finals by running the fifth-fastest time in the prelims on Saturday, crossing the line in 9.20 seconds. Senior runner Melissa Phung-Rojas also qualified for a final on Sunday, racing in the 800-meter run. She placed seventh with a time of 2:18.87 after setting a school record on Saturday with a time of 2:18.10 in the prelims.
A pair of Spartans added seventh place finishes in field events. In the shot put, junior thrower Adrienne Wachtman recorded the seventh-best mark in the competition, throwing the weight 11.47 meters. Senior jumper Mia Vargo added two points to the CWRU total with a seventh place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.53 meters.
The Spartans will have one final weekend to improve marks for selection to the NCAA Championships, traveling to Ada, Ohio, for the Polar Bear Qualifier and Medford, Massachusetts, for the Tufts National Qualifier on March 3 and 4.
