Senior runner Melissa Phung-Rojas broke her own school record in the 800-meter run to lead the Case Western Reserve University women's track and field team on the first day of the 2023 University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Brandeis University at the Gosman Center in Waltham, Massachusetts, on Saturday.
Phung-Rojas recorded a time of 2:18.10 in the 800-meter prelims on Saturday, the seventh-fastest time in the event, to qualify for the finals on Sunday. Her time bests her previous record of 2:18.56 set at the GVSU Big Meet earlier this season.
To finish the day, Phung-Rojas joined first-year runner Melanie Taylor and junior runners Jessica Kwasny and Grace Jackson to place fourth in the distance medley relay with a time of 12:16.50.
CWRU had two participants earn points in two different events on Saturday. In the weight throw, senior thrower Tori Cohen placed fourth with a toss of 15.29 meters and junior thrower Adrienne Wachtman finished fifth with a mark of 14.88 meters, giving the Spartans a total of nine points in the event. In the pole vault, senior vaulter Victoria Zhao placed sixth by clearing 3.28 meters and senior vaulter Shelby Cooper tied for eighth place by recording a mark of 3.13 meters to put 3.33 points on the board for the team.
First-year hurdler/jumper Grace Misiunas qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles on Sunday by running the fifth-fastest time in the event, 9.20 seconds.
With five of the 16 events scored after one day of competition, the Spartans are in fifth place out of seven teams with 17.33 points. The University of Chicago leads the conference with 71 points, followed by WashU with 41 points.
The two-day meet concludes on Sunday with field events starting at 10 a.m. and track events beginning at noon.
