The second-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team ran its winning streak to five matches with a pair of wins on Friday afternoon, defeating John Carroll University and Hope College by 9-0 scores at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 5-2 overall and to 5-0 against Division III opposition this season. John Carroll dropped to 0-4 following the loss, while Hope fell to 1-2.
CWRU played both matches simultaneously on Friday afternoon. The Spartans opened play against John Carroll with a sweep of doubles, as seniors James Hopper and Michael Sutanto bested Logan Langovsky and Grant Sarnowski 8-1 at no. 1 doubles, juniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang topped Anthony Markello and Kevin Wacnik 8-2 at no. 2 doubles, and senior John Kasner and first-year Matthew Plunkett defeated Philip Gorun and Nathan Palinkis 8-1 at no. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Hopper opened up with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Langovsky at first singles, while Sutanto bested Markello 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, and senior Diego Maza earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Sarnowski at third singles. Rounding out the win, Plunkett earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fourth singles over Wacnik, first-year Anmay Devaraj defeated 6-1, 6-0 over Gorun at fifth singles, and first-year Justin Prochnow 6-0, 6-0 over Palinkis.
The Spartans also swept the three doubles contests against Hope with wins from junior Sahil Dayal and senior Chris Provenzano over Jacob Burkett and Cameron Coates (8-3) at no. 1 doubles, sophomores Casey Hishinuma and Ansh Shah over Matt Henkel and Tyler Stafford (8-2) at no. 2 doubles, and first-year Rohan Bhat and sophomore Ajay Mahenthiran over Justin Fay and Austin Becksvoort (8-2) at no. 3 doubles.
Shah was the first Spartan to earn a singles win in the match, defeating Stafford 6-0, 6-2 in the second contest and Hishinuma clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Coates at no. 3 singles. Adding to the win were Aduru at no. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Burkett, Mahenthiran at no. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1 over Fay, sophomore Ben Martin at no. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Bhat at no. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Henkel.
The Spartans will be back in action on Sunday, February 19 against Allegheny College at 2:00 p.m. and Oberlin College at 4:30 p.m. at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club.
