The Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team performed a quick rebuild after losing five all-region runners from the 2022 squad with several new faces stepping up to help keep the Spartans among the top teams in the Great Lakes Region in 2023.
Led at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship by senior Stephen Henry and junior Nate Gilbert, who earned all-region honors after placing 26th and 31st out of 278 runners, respectively, out of 278 runners, CWRU finished fifth out of 40 teams. The Spartans' performance at the meet was aided by junior Aidan Nathan, who narrowly missed out on all-region honors by just one place with a 36th-place finish, while juniors Mike Lombardi (42nd) and Luke Kishna (47th) also scored for the Spartans at the meet, and first-years Seth Tivakaran (70th) and Jacob Slater (76th) turned in strong performances as well for CWRU. All seven of the Spartans' runners at the meet notched career-best 8K times at the race.
Despite the strong performance at the regional meet, CWRU narrowly missed out on what would have been its fifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance as a team and was not represented by at least one runner at the meet for the first time since the 2014 season.
CWRU hosted the University Athletic Association Championship at the University Farm for the first time since the 2009 campaign and the fifth time overall in the program's history. The Spartans went on to finish sixth as a team and were led by an 18th-place finish from Henry and a 26th-place finish from Nathan out of 77 competitors.
Other team highlights from the season include a second-place finish out of 15 teams at the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational, fourth place finishes out of 17 teams at the Dickinson Long Short and among the DIII teams at the All-Ohio Meet, an eighth-place finish out of 25 teams at the Mike Woods Invitational, and a 10th place finish out of 17 teams at the Tommy Evans Invitational to open the season. The Spartans were ranked as high as fourth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes Regional Rankings during the year.
Henry was the team's top-finishing runner in each of the six races he competed in during the season and his time of 24:37.2 at the Great Lakes Regional Championship was the fastest 8K time run by a Spartan during the year. Nathan was the team's top competitor at the All-Ohio Meet, where he placed 31st overall and 10th among Division III runners. Lombardi, Gilbert, Kishna, and Slater were each among the team's top-seven finishers in all of the team's seven races during the year.
In addition to the team's athletic success, 12 members of the men's cross country program – sophomore Danny Becker, graduate student Jacob Conard, sophomore Marias Facchinato-Sitja, Gilbert, sophomore Solomon Greene, Henry, junior Hans Holst, Kishna, junior Victor Nash, senior Matthew Smutny, senior Arjun Thillairajah, and sophomore Nathan Webb – received UAA Fall All-Academic recognition for their academic achievements. The Spartans were also named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team with the 18th-highest GPA among Division III teams, while Henry, Gilbert, Tivakaran, and Kishna each earned individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
