Case Western Reserve University junior Ajay Mahenthiran capped off his run through the ITA Central Regional Championship on Monday morning in Kalamazoo, Michigan with a win over the University of Chicago's Emil Grantcharov to clinch the singles championship at the event.
In a battle of two of the tournament's ninth-seeded players in the finals, Mahenthiran bested Grantcharov in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-1. He ended the four-day stretch with a 6-0 record in singles play.
Mahenthiran became the second player in program history to win the ITA Central Region Singles Championship, joining former Spartan James Hopper who won the event in both 2019 and 2021. By virtue of winning the singles draw, Mahenthiran earned All-America honors for the 2023-24 year, the first All-America award of his career.
After winning the tournament, Mahenthiran will join teammates Vishwa Aduru and Diego Maza (who won the doubles draw on Sunday) at the 2023 ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia from October 12-16. More information on the event will be posted as it is made available.
