Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season, falling 78-58 to Emory University in Atlanta to complete their University Athletic Association road weekend on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans fell to 10-4 overall following the setback, including a 1-2 mark in UAA games. Emory raised its record to 10-2 with a 2-1 UAA ledger. Sunday's loss was the Spartans' first to a team not ranked in the D3hoops.com Top 25 at the time of the game, although the Eagles did receive votes in last week's poll.
Senior guard/forward Isabella Mills led all CWRU players on Sunday with 19 points, adding four rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Kayla Characklis scored 14 with five rebounds and first-year guard/forward Emily Plachta added 10 points. Junior guard Margaret Terry led all Spartans with eight rebounds and four assists and scored five points.
The Spartans fell behind by 11 in the opening quarter, trailing 18-7 by the 1:57 mark, before scoring six of the final eight points of the frame to cut the Eagles' lead to seven, 20-13, heading into the second quarter. CWRU battled back to pull within six when a three-point shot by first-year guard/ forward Emily Plachta made the score 26-20 with 4:14 to play in the half. Emory built its lead back to 11 points with 14 seconds to go in the second, but a traditional three-point play by Plachta brought CWRU back within eight, 31-23, heading into halftime.
A pair of unanswered layups by Mills in the opening minute of the third quarter pulled CWRU back to within four before Emory answered with four unanswered points of their own, and eventually built its lead back to 10, 41-31, by the 4:56 mark. CWRU got back within six on a three-pointer by sophomore guard/forward Lucy Vanderbeck with 4:10 to play in the third before Emory pulled away to take a 13-point advantage, 54-41, into the final stanza. The Eagles maintained a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter, en route to the win.
The Spartans will return home to Cleveland to host a pair of UAA games next weekend, welcoming Washington (Mo.) to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Chicago on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
