Competing at the Baldwin Wallace Invitational inside the Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse in Berea, Ohio, the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team had its best meet of the young 2022-23 campaign, placing fifth with 94.5 points.
Four Spartan wrestlers placed in the top four in the weight classes, with an additional four placing fifth or sixth. The contingent was led by senior Stephen Andryc, who finished second in the 197 pound bracket with a 3-1 record. On his run to the final, Andryc recorded two wins by fall, besting Lesly Fleurissaint of Defiance in 55 seconds and Thiel's Braydon Herbster in 4:55. They were his first two pins of the season and his first career pins at 197 pounds. Before falling in the first place match, Andryc added an 8-1 win by decision over Kaleb Gelter of Mount St. Joseph.
First-year Art Martinez placed third in the 141 pound bracket, going 5-1 at the invite with three pins. He started his day with back-to-back falls, besting Defiance's Elisha Jones in 2:06 and Trine's Amir Crockett in 1:34, before recording an 11-3 major decision win over Jorden Zigo of Mount St. Joseph. After dropping a tough 5-4 decision in the semifinal, Martinez bounced back with a fall over Mount St. Joseph's Desmond Diggs at 6:59 and an 11-5 decision over Malachi Harvey of Delaware Valley in the third place match. Martinez shares the team lead with six pins this season.
With a team-leading four wins by fall, senior Mitchell Arch placed fourth at 157 pounds with a 5-2 record. Arch bested Jacob Case in 1:06, Zach Morgan in 1:39, Alejandro Castro in 4:32, and Justin Ritchie in 1:25 for his first pins of the season. His final pin was the 46th of his career. Arch's only competitive loss was a 3-2 decision to Greg Croce of Delaware Valley in the quarterfinal.
Three Spartans placed in the 149 pound bracket, with first-year Calvin Rowan finishing fourth with a 3-2 record, first-year Thomas Wagner finishing fifth with a 4-2 record, and first-year Justin Sweeney finishing eighth with a 2-3 record. Wagner recorded three pins to remain tied with Martinez for the team lead with six. He defeated Kamrin O'Neill in 1:37, Andre Henene in 4:22, and Hunter Martz in 3:58, and added a technical fall in 3:45 (16-0) over Sweeney. Sweeney earned his first career pin earlier in the day, besting Brandon Ruiz in 4:18.
First-year E.J. Alizio and senior Alex Torres each earned fifth place finishes for CWRU. Competing at 125 pounds, Alizio went 3-2, including a 3-1 win by decision in the fifth place match. Torres went 2-2 at the invite in the 184 pound bracket, adding his first pin of the season over Jack Minner in 1:13. First-year Ari Kefer (2-2) placed seventh in the 125 pound bracket, and first-year Zachary Lyon (1-2) placed seventh at 184 pounds.
Competing at 157 pounds, first-year Marty Landes went 3-3 to place sixth, earning two wins by pin and one by technical fall. Landes defeated Wade Shafer in 3:39 and Brody Gray in 4:33 to pick up his second and third pins of the season. He also bested Keagan Mabie by technical fall 16-1 in 4:32.
Also placing at the invite were first-year Keith Heineman (285 pounds, seventh) and sophomore Calvin Cai (165 pounds, eighth).
Following a week off from competition, the Spartans will conclude the 2022 portion of their schedule with the RIT Invitational in Rochester, New York on Saturday, December 3.
