CWRU Baseball Wraps up 2021 Regular Season with Split against Wooster

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team put a cap on its 2021 regular season on Sunday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader against the College of Wooster at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio for the second-straight day. The Spartans suffered a 10-7 loss in the first game of the day, before bouncing back for a 21-7 win in the second contest.

CWRU ends the regular season with a 20-10 overall record. Wooster will head into the NCAC Championship series with an overall record of 24-11.

The Spartans' offense totaled 28 runs on 34 hits over the two games, and finished the weekend with 41 runs on 56 hits over the four game series.

Game 1 – Wooster 10, CWRU 7
Three Case Western Reserve pitchers combined to match a program record with 15 strikeouts, and the Spartans outhit the Scots 15-12, but it proved to not be enough for the team in a 10-7 loss in the first game of the doubleheader.

CWRU first-year starting pitcher Reece Marley notched five strikeouts through three and two-thirds innings of work, and first-year Tyler Horvath followed him in relief, registering an additional eight strikeouts over the next three and two-thirds innings. First-year Zack Carinci closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts over the final inning and two-thirds.

The 15 strikeouts matched the program record, first set on March 7, 2004 against Washington University (Mo.).

Wooster scored the first nine runs of the game and carried a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, before the Spartans mounted a comeback attempt. In the bottom of the seventh, back-to-back-to-back one-out singles by senior designated hitter Tre Armstrong, sophomore outfielder Kevin Mackenzie and junior outfielder Cole Jarrett loaded the bases, and sophomore second baseman Trey Haley followed with a bases-clearing double. Later in the inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, sophomore first baseman Nick Talarico singled to drive in Haley, and a base hit by senior catcher Jake Ryan scored senior outfielder Benjamin Stawicki. Lott followed with a single of his own, driving in Talarico, and cutting Wooster's lead to 9-6. The Spartans sent 10 batters to the plate during the inning, seven of which registered hits.

Wooster responded with a run in the top of the eighth to go back ahead by four. Carinci led off the ninth with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by Talarico, but the Spartans would not get any closer.

Stawicki finished the game three-for-four, and Haley added a two-for-five performance with a double and three RBIs. Talarico added a pair of runs batted in, and Armstrong and Mackenzie each registered two hits in the game.

Marley suffered the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year. Steve Spidell earned the win for the Scots to improve to 2-1, while Colin Springer picked up his fourth save of the season.

Game 2 – CWRU 21, Wooster 7
The Spartans scored 21 runs on 19 hits and nine walks, and junior pitcher Willem Bouma turned in a solid six innings of relief to help lead the Spartans to a 21-7 win and force a split of the doubleheader.

The 21 runs scored by the Spartans match the fourth-most in a single game in program history, and are the most scored by the team since a 21-10 win at Wooster on April 18, 2019. It matches a 21-0 win over Westminster on April 5, 2014 for the highest-scoring output by the Spartans in the history of Nobby's Ballpark.

CWRU scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take the early lead. Wooster responded in the top of the second with five runs of their own to cut the lead down to a run.

However, Bouma entered the game in the second inning, and limit the damage from that point forward. He retired 11 consecutive batters from the third inning through the end of the sixth and finished the game with just one run allowed on four hits and a walk, while striking out five batters over his six innings of work.

CWRU added four runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 10-5, and then scored two in each of the sixth and seventh innings to go ahead 14-5. A seven-run eighth inning pushed the Spartans over the 20-run mark, and first-year Patrick O'Connor allowed one run on three hits over the final two innings to close out the victory.

First-year outfielder Matthew DuBois went three-for-four with a double, two runs scored and four RBIs. Stawicki finished the contest three-for-six with a double, two runs and three RBIs, and ended the season leading all Spartan players with a .420 batting average and 27 RBIs. Haley went three-for-six with three runs scored, finishing the year with a .382 batting average, and Lott drove in three runs in the contest as well.

Bouma earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 2.57 for the campaign. Wooster starter Owen Barnard suffered the loss to drop to 0-2 for the season.

Sunday's games marked the final scheduled contests of the 2021 regular season for the Spartans. CWRU will now await the selection of the NCAA Championship field on May 23, as the Spartan will hope to receive an at-large bid to the field.
