Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University baseball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a close on Friday afternoon, as the team suffered a pair of losses at Wittenberg University, falling 11-1 in the opening game and 11-2 in the second contest of the day.
The Spartans fell to 8-6 overall on the season with the loss, while Wittenberg improved to 11-1.
Game 1 – Wittenberg 11, CWRU 1
The Spartans' struggled to score in the opening game of the doubleheader and were ultimately doomed by three big innings by the Tigers in an 11-1 setback.
CWRU's lone run in the game came in the eighth inning, when senior shortstop Jacob Lott singled to start the frame and advanced to second on an error. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Lott scored on a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Benjamin Stawicki.
However, by the time the Spartans got on the board, Wittenberg had already built an 11-0 lead. The Tigers took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second against CWRU starting pitcher Nick Denove. The score remained 1-0 until the fourth, when Wittenberg struck for three more runs against Denove, and then blew the game open with four more runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
CWRU finished the game with seven hits, all singles, led by two-for-four performances by first-year third baseman Zack Carinci and Lott. Denove took the loss to fall to 2-2 on the campaign, while Wittenberg's Rusty Hayhurst picked up the victory to improve to 2-0 on the campaign.
In addition to the team's winning streak ending in game one, sophomore Flynn Lenahan saw his 17-game hitting streak come to a close with an 0-for-1 performance at the plate.
Game 2 – Wittenberg 11, CWRU 2
The Spartans were hurt by a big inning once again in game two, as Wittenberg completed the sweep over the Spartans with an 11-2 win in game two.
Wittenberg jumped out to an early lead one again, scoring a run in each of the first two innings to go ahead 2-0. Stawicki cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, his second in the last four games, but the Tigers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to go ahead 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, first-year catcher Connor Stephenson was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a ground out, and came around to score on a one-out single by sophomore first baseman Jonathan Simon, trimming the Wittenberg lead to 4-2. But, the Tigers had an answer again, putting up seven runs in the bottom of the frame to pull away from the Spartans for good.
CWRU starting pitcher Matt Levine suffered the loss, falling to 0-2 on the campaign. First-year Andrew Allen made his collegiate debut in the game, pitching a perfect eighth inning. Carinci picked up one of the team's five hits in the contest, going one-for-three to stretch his hitting streak to eight-straight games.
Wittenberg starter Michael Osmond improved to 2-0 with the win.
The Spartans and the Tigers will play again tomorrow, as they wrap-up their six-game season series with a doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
