The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader against Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio on Tuesday, as the Spartans topped the Tigers 4-0 in the first game, but then falling 11-3 in six innings in the second contest.

With the split, the Spartans now stand at 3-3 on the year, while Wittenberg is 4-2-1 overall for the campaign.

Game 1: CWRU 4, Wittenberg 0
The first game was scoreless until the top of the third inning before senior Hope Yashnik opened the scoring for the Spartans as she roped a RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore Amanda Riely from third.

CWRU added to their lead in the fifth when Yashnik once again stepped up to the plate and laced a RBI single down the left field line that scored Riely to give the Spartans their second run of the game.

The Spartans added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh as senior Arisa Cleaveland scored on a passed ball and junior Grace Yeung shot a single up the middle that scored first-year Kela Jagoda from third.

Senior Sidney Brannam pitched the complete game shutout, as she only allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out seven batters. She improved to 2-1 on the season. Katelyn Niswonger suffered the loss for the Tigers, as she fell to 3-1 on the campaign.

At the plate, Riely and Yashnik each went two-for-three in the game, while Yashnik drove in a pair of runs.

Game 2: Wittenberg 11, CWRU 3 (6 innings)

Wittenberg overcame an early deficit in the second game, as they scored at least a run in each of the six innings, to go on to force a split against the Spartans with an 11-3 win in six innings in the second game of the day.

The Spartans scored two runs in the top of the first, when senior Sarah Miller came around to score on a RBI single from senior Dusstyn Reynolds and then Reynolds came around to score on a RBI double from senior Arisa Cleaveland. However, the Tigers responded with a run in the bottom of the first and second innings against first-year Jenna Jaklich, evening the score at 2-2.

The Spartans had an answer in the top of the third inning when first-year KaiLi Gross hit a single to left center field that brought senior Sydney Wagner around to score. However, Wittenberg scored three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-3 lead. The Tigers scored again in the fifth and sixth, forcing the game to end early due to the run-rule.

Reynolds and Cleaveland each went two-for-three with one RBI in the second game. Jaklich took the loss on the mound to drop to 0-2, while Kira van Ravensberg picked up the win for Wittenberg, improving to 1-0.

Case Western Reserve will return to action on Saturday, as they return home for a doubleheader against Kenyon College. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. at Mather Park.
