Softball Splits Doubleheader to Wrap-Up Series at UChicago

The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader at the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon, winning the first game 7-2 before dropping the second contest 6-5, at the Stagg Grass Fields in Chicago.

The Spartans moved to 20-10 with the split and stand at 8-4 in University Athletic Association play, with the loss in the second game ending the team's six-game winning streak. The Maroons stand at 11-18 overall and 3-9 in conference games, and ended a five-game losing streak with the win in the second contest.

Stats & Standouts


  • Senior Elizabeth Berry drove in six runs over the two games, finishing with a pair of hits (including a double) and two stolen bases.

  • Junior Karen Potts finished the day five-for-seven with a double, five runs scored, and two stolen bases.

  • First-year Josephine Alspaw pitched in both games, throwing 10 innings and allowing four runs on six hits.

  • With the split, the Spartans took two of three games from the Maroons.

Game 1 Recap: CWRU def. UChicago, 7-2


  • Alspaw pitched the first six innings of the game, allowing just one run on three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts over six innings, earning the win to improve to 8-2.

  • The Spartans collected 10 hits in the contest, including a three-for-four performance with a triple, a run, and an RBI from first-year Sophia Becker.

  • Berry went one-for-two with a walk, a stolen base, two runs, and three RBIs.

  • Potts and Kaelyn Zusi each had two hits in the contest.

  • Three straight two-out walks loaded the bases for the Spartans in the top of the first, and sophomore Ashley Miller was hit by an 0-2 pitch to put CWRU ahead 1-0.

  • UChicago evened the score with a two-out run in the bottom of the third.

  • CWRU quickly retook the lead in the top of the fourth when Becker scored on a wild pitch. Berry followed with a two-run single with two outs, and would later successfully steal home to give CWRU a 5-1 lead.

  • In the top of the fifth, Miller walked with one out, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored the sixth run of the game for the Spartans on a Becker base hit.

  • A Berry sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth extended the Spartans' lead to 7-1.

  • The Maroons scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but would not get any closer, as CWRU secured the five-run win.

Game 2 Recap: UChicago def. CWRU, 6-5


  • CWRU got off to a quick start with three runs in the top of the first inning. Potts and first-year Natalie Ching started the game with back-to-back singles, and Berry reached on an error while driving in Potts from third. Ching later scored on a wild pitch, and Berry crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to give CWRU a 3-0 lead.

  • The Spartans remained ahead by three until the Maroons evened the score with a three-run bottom of the third.

  • CWRU responded in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt from Berry that scored Potts from third to give the Spartans the lead back.

  • UChicago took its first lead of the day with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth pushed the Maroons' lead to 6-4.

  • A two-out double by Berry in the top of the sixth scored Potts and cut the Maroons' lead back to a run, but the Spartans would go down in order in the ninth in the loss.

  • Potts finished the game three-for-three with three runs, a walk, a double, and two stolen bases.

  • Berry added a one-for-three performance with a double, a run, three RBIs, and a stolen base.

  • Alspaw suffered the loss in relief, falling to 8-3 on the season. UChicago's Alana Kimball secured the win to improve to 1-2, while Eleanor Johnson retired each of the four batters she faced to close out the game and earn her first save of the campaign.

Spartan Notes


  • Alspaw had been the winning pitcher in five consecutive games for the Spartans before suffering the loss in the second game of the day. She has a 2.98 ERA for the season.

  • The Spartans stand at 14-10 all-time against UChicago, and have won 12 of the last 14 meetings with the Maroons. CWRU is 10-2 all-time in games played against the Maroons in Chicago.

  • Potts has reached base in 17 consecutive games, the longest streak this season by a Spartan. Berry's current streak of 11 consecutive games reaching base is the second-longest this year by a CWRU player.

  • Ching extended her hitting streak to 10 games, the longest on the team this year, while Potts' current nine-game streak is the second longest.

The Spartans will return to Mather Park in Cleveland for their final three scheduled home games of the regular season next weekend, hosting Brandeis University on Friday and Saturday. Saturday will also mark Senior Day for CWRU, as the team will recognize its graduating class.
