The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a run-rule victory at the University of Chicago on Friday afternoon, opening the three-game series at the Stagg Grass Fields in Chicago with an 11-3 win in five innings over the Maroons.

The win was the fifth consecutive victory for the Spartans, who improved to 19-9 overall with a 7-3 University Athletic Association record, remaining just one game back in the loss column for first place in the league. UChicago dropped its fourth-straight game and now sits at 10-17 overall with a 2-8 league record.

Stats & Standouts

  • The Spartans finished the contest with a 15-6 edge in hits.

  • Senior Elizabeth Berry led the way for the Spartans at the plate, going three-for-three with two runs, two RBIs, and a walk. She hit a triple and connected on her second home run of the season, and now leads the team with 27 RBIs this year.

  • Junior Karen Potts added her team-leading seventh home run of the year, finishing the game two-for-four with two runs and two RBIs.

  • Junior Kaelyn Zusi was three-for-four with three doubles, a run, and an RBI, while also notching a steal in the game.

  • First-year Josephine Alspaw earned the win with a scoreless inning and a third of relief work, improving to 7-2. She allowed just two hits and two walks in her outing.

  • Senior Devanghi Misra started for the Spartans and went the first three and two-thirds innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in the no-decision.

  • UChicago starter Nicole Wong took the loss, dropping to 4-9 on the year.

Highlights & Scoring Recap

  • The game was scoreless until the top of the third, when Berry tripled with one out and scored a batter later on a double by junior Kaelyn Zusi. Sophomore Kate Coonan and first-year Violette Tuma added run-scoring singles in the inning to put CWRU up 3-0.

  • An inning later, a single by Berry combined with a UChicago error allowed Potts to score, and Coonan's second run-scoring single of the day made it 5-0.

  • The Maroons put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Spartans' lead to two runs, 5-3.

  • CWRU broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the fifth. First-year Sophia Becker started the scoring with an RBI single, and later in the inning, Potts and Berry each connected on two-run home runs to give the Spartans a 10-3 edge. Zusi capped off the CWRU scoring by stealing home to put CWRU ahead by eight runs going into the bottom of the fifth.

  • The Maroons put a pair on base in the bottom of the fifth, but Alspaw was able to record the final out without a run scoring for an early end to the contest due to the eight-run rule.

Spartan Notes

  • The Spartans improved to 13-9 all-time against UChicago, the team's 11th in the last 12 meetings with the Maroons. CWRU improved to 9-1 all-time in games played against the Maroons in Chicago.

  • Zusi's three doubles matched a program single-game record, achieved four times previously in team history. The last Spartan to hit three doubles in a game was KaiLi Gross, also against UChicago, on April 19, 2025.

  • Potts' home run was the 17th of her career, putting her one behind former Spartan Melissa Scopilliti for the eighth-most over a career in program history. Her seven home runs (four of which have come against UAA opponents) and .701 slugging percentage lead all UAA players this season.
