Spartan Softball Shuts Out TCNJ 4-0; Falls to Franklin & Marshall

The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up its second win of the 2017 season on Tuesday with a 4-0 shutout against The College of New Jersey before closing the day with a 9-6 loss against Franklin & Marshall College.

With the split, Case Western Reserve moved to 2-4 overall on the year.

Game 1: CWRU 4, TCNJ 0
The Spartans made the most of their three hits and took advantage of three errors and five walks from the Lions to claim a 4-0 win over TCNJ in the early game.

CWRU broke through for one run in the bottom of the first when freshman Nicole Carty singles to center field to drive in sophomore Nicole Doyle. The RBI was Carty's third on the season.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the second, when freshman Ashley Carroll scored on an illegal pitch. Following the illegal pitch, junior Grace Tritchler hit a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in junior Katie Wede from third. Then the Spartans performed a double steal that included freshman Emily Nishiwaki stealing home to give CWRU a 4-0 advantage.

Senior Annie Wennerberg went the distance for a nine-hit shutout, the Spartans' second shutout of the 2017 campaign. She pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing nine hits and striking out two, while walking three batters, en route to earning the win to improve to 2-2 for the year.

Carty finished the day two-for-three with a run-batted-in, while junior Maren Waldner went one-for-two at the plate with one walk.

Sara Bielamowics took the loss for TCNJ in the game, falling to 1-1 for the season, as the Lions dropped to 4-4 overall.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 9, CWRU 6
Doyle paced the Spartans at the plate in the second game, going four-for four with a double, two runs scored and one run batted in, but it was not enough for Case Western Reserve, which fell 9-6 to Franklin & Marshall in its second game of the day.

The Diplomats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring six runs on five hits. CWRU responded in the top of the second with an RBI double from Wennerberg to cut the deficit to 6-1.

Franklin & Marshall added two runs in the bottom half of the second increase the Diplomat lead to 8-1. The Spartans again responded in the third when Nishiwaki scored after Doyle was caught stealing second.

The score remained 9-2 until the Spartans scored three runs in the top of the fifth, with RBI's coming from Doyle, Tritchler and Waldner. CWRU made one final push in the top of the seventh when Carty doubled to left field to score Doyle which cut the Diplomats lead to 9-6. The Spartans were able to load the bases before F&M brought in Katie Wenger closed the game by getting Wennerberg to ground into a double play.

Freshmen Callie Wang (0-1) took the loss for the Spartans as she allowed five runs on three hits. Carty came in for relief and pitched five scoreless innings, striking out three and scattering four hits.

Izzy Schaefer earned the win to improve to 1-2 overall on the year, as the Diplomats improved to 1-5 overall.

The Spartans will continue play in the Rebel Spring Games on Wednesday, March 15th with a game against Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) College at 9:00 a.m. and round out the second day of competition against Lesley University at 11:15 a.m.
