Spartan Men Finish Fourth; Women Place Eighth at All-Ohio Champs

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the 2017 All-Ohio Indoor Championships at Otterbein University in Westerville, Ohio on Saturday.

The Spartan men finished fourth out of 18 teams with 70 points, while the women finished in eighth place with 35 points. Mount Union won both the men's and women's portions of Saturday's meet.

The men's 4x200-meter relay team of junior Adrian Cannon, senior Nico Ericksen-Deriso, junior Andrew Ibibo and senior Nathaniel Wahner highlighted the Spartans performances as they finished first in the event with a time of 1:30.91. Wahner also added a third place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.60 and a sixth place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.50. Ibibo placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.27.

The men's distance medley relay team of junior Nicholas Knorz, freshman Jonathan Haling, freshman Michael Hradesky and junior Aidan DeSanto claimed a second place finish in the event with a time of 10:29.89. Haling and Ericksen-Deriso also teamed with junior Grant Mlack and sophomore Joseph Cabral to place second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:26.72. Cabral also added a third place finish in the 800-meter dash with a time of 1:57.11.

For the women on Saturday, junior Danielle Kulpins crossed the finish line in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:28.69 to place second in the event. Freshman Samantha Kelts added a third place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 10.59 meters.

Other Spartan highlights from the All-Ohio meet included CWRU women's distance medley relay team of freshman Vanessa Pasadyn, sophomore Maria DeRenzo, freshman Shahed Eid, and sophomore Jennifer Hoffman, who finished third with a time of 12:56.94. Pasadyn also teamed with junior Marie-Louise Kloster, freshman Bari Love and sophomore Olivia Newman to place fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:08.86. Individually, Pasadyn also contribute a third place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.95.

Each of the Spartans who earned top-three finishes in their respective events received All-Ohio recognition for their performances.

The Spartans were also in action on Friday, with a group competing at the Mid-February Meet, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. The women finished fifth out of 13 teams with 76 points, while the men placed ninth out of 13 teams with 32 points.

Spartan women recording top-five finishes at the meet included sophomore Maria DeRenzo in the 800-meter run (first, 2:26.40), junior Nimi Gupta in the weight throw (first, 15.02 meters), freshman Madeline Lindemann in the 3,000-meter run (second, 11:27.53), sophomore Shannon Carroll in the shot put (second, 11.87 meters), junior Claire Plunkett in the 3,000-meter run (third, 11:44.27), freshman Melissa Cuellar in the shot put (fourth, 11.38 meters), freshman Brianna Rees in the 400-meter dash (fourth, 1:04.36) and sophomore Sophie Trikeriotis in the 1,000-meter run (fifth, 3:44.37).

Top-five finishes for the men came from junior Zak Hurd in the 55-meter dash (fourth, 6.70), junior Alex Nesvisky in the shot put (fourth, 13.67 meters) and senior Daniel Wade (fifth, 13.28 meters).

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend at a pair of meets. CWRU will head to the Greater Cleveland Colleges Meet at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio on Friday, February 17th, and then send a group to the Kent State Tune-Up at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio on Saturday, February 18th.
