Spartans Defeat San Diego Mesa and Grossmont on Opening Match of Spring Break Trip

SAN DIEGO – The No. 9 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team defeated San Diego Mesa College 6-3 and Grossmont College 9-0 on the first competition of their spring break trip in San Diego, California.

The Spartans are now 7-3 on the season.

Against San Diego Mesa, the Spartans finished doubles play with a 2-1 edge. Juniors CJ Krimbill (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain) and Louis Stuerke (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) defeated their opponnent in straight-sets at No. 1 (8-4).  At No. 2 doubles, senior Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) and partner freshman Andrew Komarov (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) picked up a 8-6 win for CWRU.

All four singles matches won by the Spartans were done so in straight sets.  Krimbill took No. 1 singles 6-2 and 6-1 while Drougas outscored his opponent at No. 2 by a score of 6-4, 6-2.  At Sophomore Joshua Dughi (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) won 6-4, 6-4 and senior Bas van Lent (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) took No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

In the win against Grossmont, the Spartans swept all singles and doubles matches.  

The doubles pairs of Krimbill and Stuerke at No.1 and Drougas and Komarov at No. 2 defeated their opponents in straight sets. At No. 3 doubles, sophomores Freddy Daum (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) and Adam Collins (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) outscored their competitors 8-2.

Junior Viswajit Simhadri (Saratoga, Calif./Lynbrook) took No. 1 singles with a 7-5, 7-6 win. Stuerke, Dughi, and van Lent all gathered points for the Spartans with wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5. Freshman Tytus Chen (San Jose, Calif./Mountain View) picked up a point for the Spartans at No. 3 singles defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-2.  Junior Samuel Shi (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

The Spartans return to action on Tuesday, March 10 against Washington University in St. Louis and Vanguard University of Southern California.
