Spartan Softball Hosts Fellow Regionally Ranked Heidelberg for Seniors' Day; Follow Live

CLEVELAND – Looking to bolster its resume for an NCAA Regional berth, the Case Western Reserve University softball team hosts Heidelberg University for Seniors' Day this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Mather Park.

In between games, Case Western Reserve will honor its three softball senior student-athletes – shortstop Makenzie Lein, outfielder Katherine Seo and catcher Amy Taylor.

Spartan Notes

Ranked third in the most recent NCAA Central Region rankings, the Spartans (25-13) are 12-4 in the month of April.

The Spartans 14-game home win streak ended in game one, Thursday against Otterbein University, but CWRU bounced back to win the nightcap, 4-1. The team's 25 wins this season are the fourth most in program history behind the totals from 2012 (26-15), 1999 (25-9) and 2001 (31-10).

Lein is the team's top hitter with a .405 batting average  to go along with six doubles, a triple, three home runs, 29 RBI and 30 runs scored. Taylor is second on the team with a .388 average, while second baseman Molly O'Brien, a .380 hiter, leads the team with 52 hits, 38 runs and 16 stolen bases.

On the mound, rookie Annie Wennerberg has appeared in 25 games with 20 starts and gone 12-4 with an ERA of 3.61. Wennerberg has also recored a team-high 93 strikeouts in 117 1/3 innings of work. Rebecca Molnar (8-1) leads the team in ERA (1.99), while Rebecca Taylor has recorded four wins, four saves and a 4.00 ERA.

Earlier this season, the Spartans claimed a share of the program's first University Athletic Association Championship since 1999.

2014 Seniors

#3 Makenzie Lein
Makenzie is native of Petersburg, Michigan and a product of Ida High School. She is a four-year starter that had started all 158 games during the past three-plus seasons before missing the last two due to injury. One of the finest shortstops to ever suit up for Case Western Reserve, she is a career .335 hitter with 12 home runs, 41 doubles and 95 RBI. Makenzie is the program's all-time leader in both career hits (172) and runs scored (125), and she ranks fourth in starts (158), doubles, homers and RBI. During her freshman season, Makenzie pitched in 28 games and logged a 13-8 record with 15 complete games. She is a two-time UAA Hitter of the Week and a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree as a chemical engineering major. Makenzie is the daughter of Heath and Regina Lein.

#21 Katherine Seo
Katherine is a native of Salt Lake City, Utah and a product of Olympus High School. She has played in 107 games for her career with 76 starts despite missing almost all of last season due to injury. Katherine has career totals of 57 hits, two homers, 22 RBI and 14 stolen bases. She also won six games on the mound as a freshman with seven complete games. A marketing major, Katherine is the daughter of Paul and Karen Seo.

#17 Amy Taylor
Amy is a native of Brier, Washington and a product of Inglemoor High School. She is a four-year starter and one of the finest backstops to ever play softball at CWRU. In 144 games played, she is a career .349 hitter with six homers, 27 doubles and 85 RBI. She ranks eighth all-time in program history in batting average, fifth in hits (157), seventh in RBI and eighth in games started (141). Behind the plate, the 2013 first-team All-UAA selection has thrown out a school-record 49 runners attempting to steal. A finance major, Amy is the daughter of Don and Jan Taylor.

Student Prince Notes

Ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Central Region rankings, the Student Princes (23-13) have won seven of their last 10 games, Yesterday, the Student Princes split a doubleheader against Otterbein University.

Offensively, the Student Princes are led by infielder Lisa Simmons, who is hitting .392 with six doubles, two triples, 16 RBI and 38 runs scored. Infielder Kayla Zachrich has a .362 average to go along with six doubles, six triples and 28 RBI. Catcher Mikaela Mitsch, a .333 hitter, has 11 doubles, eight home runs and 30 RBI.

On the mound, Erin Chapman (11-8) and Paige Atterholt (12-5) have started 18 and 17 games, respectively, to serve as the team's primary pitchers. Chapman has logged a team-high 119 1/3 innings with a 3.24 ERA and 81 strikeouts. Atterholt, in 102 2/3 innings, has posted a 3.77 ERA with 41 strikeouts.
