Spartan Softball Splits on Final Day at Richardson Games, Set for UAA Championship in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Case Western Reserve University softball team split its final two contests at the Dot Richardson Spring Games on Saturday at the National Training Center Complex.

The Spartans (5-3) opened their day with a 7-1 victory versus St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) before falling to Cornell College (Iowa), 5-4 in 10 innings.

Versus St. Lawrence (0-2), sophomore pitcher Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) logged a complete game with zero earned runs allowed and six strikeouts in seven innings of work.

The Spartans did most of their damage at the plate with six runs in the sixth inning.

For the game, junior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a pair of runs scored. Senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) was 1-for-2 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and three RBI. Junior rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) finished 2-for-3 with a double and a run.

Versus Cornell (3-1), an NCAA Tournament qualifier last season, sophomore outfielder Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) was 2-for-5 with her first collegiate homerun and three RBI. The Spartans outhit the Rams, 14-5, but committed five errors that led to five unearned runs for Cornell.

CWRU tied the game at 3-3 when Klemmer hit a two-run homer to right field in the sixth inning. In extras, the Spartans gained a 4-3 lead thanks to a Cornell error in the eighth. However, the Spartans returned the favor with two errors the bottom of the inning, and Cornell got an RBI single by Rebekah Orzga to win the game in the 10th.

Junior Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) was the tough-luck loser on the mound, surrendering just two unearned runs on one hit with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings of relief. Freshman Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) started and did not allow an earned run in four innings.

After two days off from competition, the Spartans make a short trip east for the 2014 University Athletic Association Championship from March 11-15 at the Seminole Complex in Altamonte Springs. The team will open the championship versus Brandeis University (Mass.) at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11.
