Spartan Softball Opens Florida Trip with Two Wins at Dot Richardson Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla – Senior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the first game as the Case Western Reserve University softball team won twice to open its annual spring break trip at the Dot Richardson Games on Friday afternoon at the National Training Center Complex.

The Spartans (4-2) topped previously unbeaten Moravian College (Pa.), 3-2, and Marywood University (Pa.), 7-2. Due to inclement weather, both games started later than scheduled, and the second ran into the final hours of the night.

Versus Moravian (5-1), both teams scored once in the first as Taylor hit an RBI single for the Spartans, and Jenn Dalickas did the same for Moravian. Neither team scored again until the fifth when a Taylor infield hit set up a throwing error that allowed senior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) to scamper home. The Spartans added an important insurance run in the sixth when senior pinch runner Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus) came home on a double-steal attempt.

That run would prove to be crucial as Moravian scored once in the bottom of the seventh on a fielding error. Freshman pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was able to pick up her defense, however, with a fly out and a strike out to strand the potential tying run at second.

Wennerberg (2-0) recorded her second complete-game victory in a row with one earned run allowed on seven hits in seven innings.

Versus Marywood (1-4), junior pitcher Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) improved to 2-1 for the season with seven innings pitched and six strikeouts. At the plate, sophomore first baseman Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

The Spartans wrap up competition at the Dot Richard Spring Games tomorrow versus St. Lawrence (N.Y.) and Cornell College (Iowa) at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively. The team then makes a short trip east for the 2014 University Athletic Association Championship from March 11-15 at the Seminole Complex in Altamonte Springs.
