Spartan Softball Scores a Combined 20 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Westminster

Box Score 1

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University softball team combined to score 20 runs on 31 hits in a sweep of Westminster College in a make-up doubleheader on Thursday at WC Softball Field.

The Spartans (12-8) defeated the Titans (10-6) by scores of 7-5 and 13-0 (5 innings). The doubleheader was a make-up from the originally scheduled twinbill of March 26 in Cleveland.

A number of Spartans had stellar days at the plate. Amongst the highlights, junior second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) went 5-for-7 with three runs scored, an RBI, two doubles and two stolen bases.

Senior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) was 4-for-6 with five RBI and a steal. Lein also scored a run to bump her career total to 109 – four shy of Carla Kinyon's (1998-01) school career record (113).

In game one, the Spartans jumped out of the gate with a four-run first inning highlighted by a three-run homer to left by sophomore third baseman Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance). Another run in the second followed by two more in the third on a single by sophomore outfielder Kristen Klemmer (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) countered two in the second for the Titans. Westminster then pulled to within 7-5 with three in the bottom of the fourth, but sophomore pitcher Annie Wennerberg (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) was able to shut the hosts out for the final three frames.

Offensively, Klemmer, O'Brien and junior first baseman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) each finished 2-for-4.

Wennerberg (7-1) allowed three earned runs in her fourth complete game of 2014.

Kelsey Squelch was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk for Westminster. Ashley Smith (5-2) took the loss in six innings pitched.

In game two, CWRU jumped out to another early lead with five in the first as Dreger and Taylor each drove in one in front of a two-run single by Lein. Three more in the third and five more in the fourth invoked the varsity run rule. Lein and Wennerberg each had two-run singles in the fourth.

For the game, the Spartans racked up 18 hits for the second time this season. Lein finished 3-for-3 with a career-high five RBI. O'Brien also went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and her second stolen base of the day. Four other Spartans recorded two hits, including Dreger, who was 2-for-2 with two runs.

On the mound, Taylor (3-6) threw five scoreless innings for her first shutout of the year and eighth career.

Squelch once again went 2-for-3 for the Titans, while Amber Forrest (5-2) took the loss on the bump.

Due to inclement weather, the Spartans' weekend schedule remains unclear. A final decision should be made on Friday.
