Box Score CLEVELAND – With an equalizing goal in the 63rd minute, the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with the University of Rochester (N.Y.) on Seniors' Night at DiSanto Field.
The Spartans conclude the season at 8-9-2 overall and 0-5-2 in the University Athletic Association. The Yellowjackets finish at 6-6-5, 1-3-3 UAA.
Prior to the match, Case Western Reserve honored its three women's soccer senior student-athletes, midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic), defender Katie Chapin (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) and forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley).
The Spartans had a significant scoring threat early, but a shot by junior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) hit the post in the third minute, and the follow-up shot by freshman midfielder Anne Backlund (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) sailed high.
The first goal of the match came at 30:16 when Emily Downie connected on a penalty kick after teammate Jessica Smith was fouled in the box. Most of the match was played in between the 20s from that point, and it wasn't until the 63rd minute when another significant shot occurred.
Fortunately for Case, that shot resulted in the team's first goal in conference play. Sophomore midfielder Kate Dolansky (Brecksville, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) battled relentlessly and fired a long shot that nailed the Rochester post. On the rebound, Sabers grabbed possession and scored on an empty net at the 62:17 mark.
Both teams turned up the heat from there and each took turns with good looks at the net. However, the match went to overtime.
In the first extra period, the Spartans had a golden opportunity when sophomore forward Kiley Armstrong (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) took advantage of a turnover in the box and sent a shot at Yellowjacket goalkeeper Allison Berstein. The keeper was able to turn that shot away and regroup to stop the rebound attempt by Sabers.
In the second OT, Rochester had most of the shots, but Spartan junior Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) turned them each away.
For the match, both teams attempted 15 shots, while Rochester led in corner kicks, 7-4.
In goal, Smith (8-9-2) recorded four saves for the Spartans. Allison Berstein made five stops in 110 minutes for the Jackets.
