Box Score OLIVET, Mich. – After battling for nearly 108 minutes of play, the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team dropped a tough, 3-2 double overtime decision to Olivet College on Saturday at the Olivet College Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 2-2 overall, but are right back in action at home versus cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Case Field. The Comets remain unbeaten at 3-0-1.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half with neither side able to generate much of a scoring threat.
In the early minutes of the second half, Case was able to break the scoreless tie when senior midfielder/forward Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored his first goal of the season and 12th of his career. Just over 15 minutes later, freshman midfielder Slater Jameson (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) gave Case a 2-0 lead with his first career goal via an assist from senior back Sam Kuehnle (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills).
However, the Comets drew even with two Fred Smyser goals in the 69th and 76th minutes off of assists from Esteban Russell.
The match remained deadlocked at 2-2 until the second overtime period when Smyser completed his "hat trick" with a penalty kick conversion in the 108th minute.
For the match, Olivet outshot the Spartans, 23-15, including 6-1 in the overtime sessions, and also held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Between the pipes, Spartan sophomore Jay Darby (Flower Mound, Texas/Argyle) logged the first 22:54 of action and recorded four saves. Senior keeper Ryan Koepka (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) played the final 84:36 and tallied six stops in taking the hard-luck loss. Alex Lang played the entire match for the Comets and picked up three saves.
Following Tuesday's match versus Baldwin Wallace, the Spartans once again hit the road for a 7:00 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 15 versus Oberlin College.
