Box Score ADA, Ohio – Sophomore forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) scored her third goal of the season in the 57th minute to help the No. 17 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw at No. 12 Ohio Northern University on Sunday at the ONU Soccer Field.
The Spartans move to 1-0-1 for the season and return to action on Wednesday, September 5 at Denison University in Granville. A season ago, the Big Red and Spartans forged a scoreless tie at Case Field in Cleveland.
With the tie, Ohio Northern sits at 0-0-2.
The Polar Bears got on the board first in the 17th minute when Kristina Klusek scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Paige Garber. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the hosts headed into the halftime break despite numerous chances for the Spartans, including a potential scoring attempt from sophomore forward Christine Straka (Prospect Hts., Ill./Saint Viator) that hit the crossbar in the 26th minute.
With the Case offensive pressure turned up following halftime, Sabers got the Spartans on the board by beating ONU goalkeeper Erin Waehner to the upper left 90. Senior captain and midfielder Deena Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) assisted Sabers on the play.
In net for Case, sophomore Cameron Casson (Allen, Texas/Allen) started and played the first half with three saves. Freshman Megan Romelfanger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) was inserted following halftime and recorded four saves during the final 65 minutes of action. Waehner concluded the match with five stops for the Polar Bears.
For the match between the nationally-ranked squads, the Spartans outshot the Polar Bears 15-9, including a 4-1 advantage in the overtime sessions, while each team managed five corner kicks. Straka finished with four shots, while Deena Levey fired off three. ONU's Klusek led all players with seven shots.
Following Wednesday's match at Denison, the Spartans open up the home portion of their 2012 schedule on Saturday, Sept. 8 when Centre College (Ky.) visits Case Field. A season ago, the Spartans were 8-3-2 at home.
