The Spartans (25-14 overall) are ranked sixth in the Central Region according to the latest NCAA Rankings. A pair of wins versus the Tigers (22-16) would better the team's chances for earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
Prior to Sunday's doubleheader, the program will dedicate its brand new scoreboard made possible through the generosity of the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association. The Spartans, 19-7 since returning from their annual spring break trip in Florida, enter the final doubleheader of the regular season riding a four-game winning streak with a sweep of Penn State University-Altoona this past Wednesday by scores of 13-4 and 11-5. The doubleheader was played at Nittany Lion Park, home of Penn State, and marked the first time in program history the Spartans played in a Division I facility. Senior first baseman/designated player Lauren Wolz hit a pair of homeruns in the opener to break the school career hits record. The Spartans tied the 1999 squad (25-9) for the second-most wins in program history, and Wolz now owns the CWRU career records for hits (170), homeruns (27) and runs batted-in (125).
For the season, freshman rightfielder Gena Roberts is batting a team-best .431 with a .530 clip (44-of-83) over the last 26 games. Roberts is tied for the conference lead with seven homers and paces the squad with 53 hits, tying the CWRU single-season mark set a year ago by Wolz. Wolz is second on the squad with a .372 average and also has seven homers with a team-best 36 RBI and 25 walks. Freshman second baseman Molly O'Brien is third on the team in hitting at .360 and second on the squad with 49 hits, while pacing the team with 36 runs scored, three triples and 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts. Sophomore shortstop Makenzie Lein, the reigning UAA Hitter of the Week, is batting .331 with a team-best 12 doubles to go along with three homers and 26 RBI, while senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden is third on the team with four homers and 27 RBI.
On the mound, freshman Rebecca Taylor is the ace of the staff with a school single-season record 19 victories (19-10), two saves, a 3.11 earned run average, 23 complete games, four shutouts and a school single-season record 175 strikeouts. Freshman Christina Hunger has missed the last 10 games due to injury (5-2, 2.45 ERA), while classmate Hillary Bunnelle has a 1-2 record with one save in 17.2 innings of work.
The Tigers have lost six-straight and eight of their last nine contests all within the North Coast Athletic Conference. During the last two doubleheaders, the Tigers were swept at Denison University and versus Oberlin College. Senior shortstop Jessica Snyder was 4-for-4 at the plate in the opener versus Oberlin with three RBI and also went 3-for-4 with an RBI in game two.
For the season, Snyder leads the Tigers at the plate with a .385 batting average, 52 hits and 33 runs scored to go along with 10 doubles, nine steals, a homer and 15 RBI. Sophomore outfielder Laura Rose is a .328 hitter and leads the team in homers (4), triples (4) and steals (11) to go along with nine doubles and 31 RBI. Senior first baseman Tori Amicon also checks in with a .328 average, a homerun and paces Wittenberg with 33 RBI.
On the mound, the Tigers feature a quartet of arms. Sophomore Rachel Ross (11-7, 3.40 ERA, 91 Ks, 113.1 IP) is the ace of the staff, while freshman Julia Williams (7-5, 2.40 ERA, 44 Ks, 93.1 IP) could also get a start. Senior Anna Kvartunas and sophomore Kelby Kittles have also logged innings in the circle for the Tigers this spring.
