No. 21 Spartan Men Upset No. 13 CMU to Match Best Finish in Program History

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Freshman No. 1 singles player Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) clinched the winning point in the third set as the No. 21 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team upset No. 13 Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) in the third-place match of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship at Sanlando Park. The Spartans equal the top conference finish in program history and bolster their resume for an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

The fourth-seeded Spartans (15-8 overall, 2-1 UAA) become the second team (1999) in school history to finish third at the UAA Championship. The second-seeded Tartans drop to 13-8 overall and 1-2 in the Association.

CMU grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles action with Case's point coming at third position from senior co-captain Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and sophomore Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey).

In singles, the Spartans moved ahead with wins at No. 6 by sophomore John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton), No. 4 by Patel and No. 5 by Klawitter to counter a CMU victory at No. 3.

With the score at 4-3, Drougas, No. 6 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region, clinched the match with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win versus Duke Miller, No. 4 in the Atlantic South.

Senior Sean Carr (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) was also still on the court, and the senior co-captain added the icing to the cake with a marathon 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) victory.

The Spartans now await word from the NCAA Championship selection committee with qualifying teams expected to be announced on Monday, May 7 at 10:00 p.m. on NCAA.com and individual qualifiers announced via press release on Wednesday, May 9.
