The Spartans (10-6 overall) return from the "Sunshine State" after posting a 4-4 mark and a third-place finish at last week's University Athletic Association Championship. Junior centerfielder Paul Pakan, who sports a UAA-best .433 batting average, has recorded at least one hit in 15-of-16 games after transferring in from George Washington University (D.C.). Pakan also paces the team in walks (9), runs batted-in (13) and runs scored (15) and is tied for team-high honors with senior outfielder/designated hitter Sam Alexander with two home runs. Junior first baseman Brett Ossola is second on the team with a .379 average, while senior left fielder Jimmy Abed leads the way with five stolen bases. The Spartan pitching staff features plenty of depth starting with left-handed junior ace Jamie Hora, who is 4-0 with a 2.96 earned run average and 15 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Senior Bradley Potter (2-1) ranks third in the UAA with a 1.35 ERA in 26.2 IP, while sophomore closer Jose Vega is second in the league with five saves. Freshman right-hander Edward Abramson has seen time as both a starter and reliever, compiling a 1-0 record and 1.80 ERA in 15 innings with 15 strikeouts.
Grove City (2-8) has dropped eight in a row since opening the season with two wins. Through 10 games, junior catcher Doug Wells leads the way offensively as one of five Wolverines with a .300 or better batting average. Wells has amassed a .407 average and one homer with team highs in doubles (3), RBI (10) and slugging percentage (.630). Junior Zach Struharik is batting .353 with a team-high 12 base-hits, including the team's other home run to go with seven RBI, while sophomore Tom Hawley (.323 BA) and junior Josh Sacks (.308 BA) are each above .300. Sacks is also a perfect 5-for-5 in stolen base attempts. Max Vickerman has made a team-high four appearances on the mound with a 4.76 ERA in 17 innings of work.
