O'Day's First Career Goal Lifts Spartans to Season-Opening Victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team opened its 2011 season with a 1-0 victory against host Washington and Jefferson College on Thursday, September 1 at Alexandre Field.

The Spartans, now 1-0 on the young season, are back in action this Sunday, Sept. 5 for a 1:00 p.m. match at Earlham College (Ind.).

CWRU scored its first goal of the season when freshman forward Patrick O'Day (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) notched his first collegiate goal with an assist from junior Marco Patrie (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster School) with 15:21 elapsed.

In goal, Spartan senior keeper Ben Yabrow (Marietta, Ga./George Walton Comprehensive) recorded five saves for his 13th career shutout. Pete Tomlinson made seven stops in net for the Presidents.

For the game, the Spartans outshot W&J, 17-5, and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Individually, Case junior forward/midfielder Eric Erb (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) recorded four shots.

The season-opening win marks the second-straight year the Spartans have posted a shutout in their opening match and the third shutout win in the last four openers.

Following Sunday's game, the Spartans open up the home portion of their season with back-to-back home matches including a Sept. 6 contest versus Muskingum University at 7:30 p.m. at Case Field.
