Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University softball team closed its season with a split, winning game one 7-3 before falling 8-1 in the second matchup, on Seniors' Day against Walsh University on Saturday, April 30 at Mather Park. The Spartans finished the year with a 19-25 overall record, a 10-win improvement from last season.
Prior to the doubleheader, the Spartans honored their four graduating seniors: Anneliese Fetterman (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista), Mary Kruszka (Lakeview, NY/Immaculata Academy), Beth Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, OH/Nordonia) and Katie Green (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon).
Case got off to a fast start in the first half of the doubleheader with a three-run homer to straightaway center by junior Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) her 10th long ball of the season. In the second, Case increased its lead to 5-0 on a sacrifice by Andrasik and a Walsh error. The Cavaliers got on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice of their own, but Case crossed the plate twice more in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Courtney Branson (Orient, OH/Teays Valley) and on a double steal attempt.
Walsh would add two more runs, but freshman Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) closed out the game to pick up the win, improving to 13-8 on the season and logging her 15th complete game in the process.
In game two, the Cavaliers ran out to a 4-0 advantage as Case could not dent the scoreboard until the fourth on a Walsh error. Walsh proceeded to add two in the fifth and sixth innings as Ashley Virgin shut down the Spartan offense, allowing just one unearned run. Freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) took the loss for Case to fall to 6-10 on the year.
