Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University softball team posted a pair of double-digit scoring efforts in a doubleheader sweep of visiting Kenyon College on Sunday, April 3 at Mather Park. The Spartans won 11-1 and 12-4 as each game ended in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
With the sweep, the Spartans improve to 8-20 overall. Kenyon falls to 6-10.
In game one, Kenyon threatened in the opening inning with two runners in scoring position and no out, but freshman pitcher Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) was able to induce a ground out, pop out and line out to keep the game scoreless. Case then got a run in its half of the inning as senior shortstop Beth Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, OH/Nordonia) doubled then came around to score on a single by junior designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge).
The lead grew to 3-0 in the third when Wolz belted a two-run homer to left. Kenyon got one in the fourth, but the Spartans quickly answered with four in their half of the inning as Lein highlighted the rally with a three-run homer to left. Case then ended the game early as sophomore rightfielder Kayla Lang (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.) drove a run home on a ground ball and freshman second baseman Courtney Branson (Orient, OH/Teays Valley) connected for a three-run homer to left.
Lein allowed just one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out a season-high five.
For the game, Wolz was 2-for-2 with a homerun and three RBI, while junior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) was 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored.
In game two, each side scored twice in the first before Kenyon grabbed a 4-2 lead with two runs in the second. Case answered with five runs in its half of the second as Boden got the ball rolling with a lead-off homerun. Lein, Andrasik, Wolz and freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) all drove in a run during the inning.
Case then added three in the third to make the score 10-4 as Wolz delivered another RBI single. The Spartans then put the game away with two in the fifth as a run scored on a walk and another scored on a wild pitch.
On the mound, Seo tossed the final three innings in relief and only allowed one hit while striking out two.
At the plate, Seo was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Wolz was 3-for-3 with two RBI.
The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday, April 6 at Oberlin College at 3:30 p.m.
