Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a pair of road games with Wittenberg University on Sunday, March 27 at Betty Doughman Dillahunt Field. The Spartans won game one, 5-2, but dropped the day's second contest, 6-2, to move their season record to 6-16.
The Spartans led 2-0 in game one after a solo home run by junior Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) in the second and an RBI single by senior Beth Andrasik (Sagamore Hills, OH/Nordonia) in the third. Meanwhile, freshman starting pitcher Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) was cruising on the mound and held Wittenberg scoreless through six.
In the seventh the Spartans added three crucial insurance runs as freshman Amy Taylor (Brier, WA/Inglemoor) recorded an RBI single to center. Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) then doubled in a run and later scored on a fielder's choice by freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus). The Tigers rallied for two off Lein in the final frame, but the freshman was able to close out the win to improve to 4-4 overall on the season.
The bats went cold in game two, however, as Case did not score until the fourth inning on an RBI single by sophomore Kayla Lang (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Hts.). Wolz added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but it wasn't enough as Seo took the loss of the mound to fall to 2-6 on the season. Senior Mary Kruszka (Lakeview, NY/Immaculata Academy) pitched three shutout innings in relief, scattering three hits and recording a strikeout.
Case has now won four of six in the last week and will look to continue its recent success as Waynesburg University (PA) visits Mather Park on Tuesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. for an afternoon doubleheader.
