Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – A second-half penalty kick was the difference as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team lost a physical, 2-1 game to the University of Chicago (IL) on Sunday, October 17 at Case Field.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 8-5-1 overall and 1-3 in the University Athletic Association. With its win, Chicago improves to 8-4-1 overall and 3-1 in the UAA.
Chicago opened the scoring early when Allison Hegel found the back of the net following a through ball from Maggie Tobin in the fourth minute. Case answered in the 12th minute when sophomore midfielder Deena Levey (Columbus, OH/Bexley) scored on a long bender from the corner via an assist from sophomore midfielder Devyn Lee (State College, PA/State College).
The Maroons went back ahead in the 61st minute when Emily Benoit scored on a penalty kick following a Spartan foul in the box. The Spartans had several chances at tying the score, including two shots by freshman midfielder Rachel Borque (Lawrence, MA/Central Catholic) in the 67th and 68th minutes and a shot by freshman forward Leah Levey (Columbus, OH/Bexley) with 00:36 left in the game.
Case junior goalkeeper Anna Kennedy (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) recorded five saves, including two outstanding stops late in the contest. Emma Gormley totaled four stops for the Maroons.
For the game, Chicago outshot Case, 10-7, and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Spartans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 23 versus Westminster College (PA) at 7:30 p.m. The game is designated as "Kicks for a Cause" night with all proceeds going to benefit the University Hospitals' Ireland Cancer Center.
