Volleyball Drops Home Match to BW in Four Sets

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team fell to Baldwin Wallace University in four sets 25-22, 9-25, 18-25, 21-25 in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.

The Spartans fell to 2-3 with their second loss in a row, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-0 to start 2026.

Stats and Standouts


First Set (25-22)


  • The Spartans started the match by winning the first five points, prompting an early timeout by the visitors
  • BW used an 11-3 run to take a 10-8 edge, as the hosts took time to discuss the change in momentum
  • CWRU reclaimed the lead with a kill by sophomore Isabel Haytayan, service ace by Datto, and bad set by the Yellow Jackets
  • The teams traded the team back-and-forth in middle of the set before Case Western Reserve went ahead 21-19 on a kill by junior Sienna Olson
  • After two consecutive BW points tied the score at 21, first-year Ava Felgar and senior Emily Goodpaster put the hosts ahead 23-21
  • The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to one with a kill, but Goodpaster gave the Spartans the serve for the set with a kill
  • An attacking error clinched the set for the hosts

Second Set (9-25)


  • With the score tied at six, BW won 17 of the next 18 points to secure the second set and even the match score at one

Third Set (18-25)


  • On the strength of a 7-0 run, Baldwin Wallace took an 11-6 lead in the pivotal third set
  • The Yellow Jackets expanded their lead to seven, 17-10, on a service ace
  • Halter put down a kill, BW committed an error, and sophomore Kate Williams followed with a kill to bring the Spartans within four
  • The visitors responded by winning six of the next nine rallies, regaining a seven-point edge late in the set
  • CWRU was able to cut the deficit to five, but ultimately fell in the set, 25-18

Fourth Set (21-25)


  • BW took an early 9-6 lead in the set
  • A kill by Goodpaster and one by Halter each brought CWRU within a point of tying the score
  • The visitors took a three-point lead before the teams traded the next 10 points
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to four, 19-15, but two consecutive mistakes halved the deficit for the hosts
  • A Basinger kill brought the team within two, 20-18, before a kill and service ace put the Yellow Jackets three points away from winning the match
  • The teams traded the next four points a kill by Zarow fought off the first match point
  • However, BW ended the match on the next rally with a kill

Spartan Notes


  • CWRU dropped to 11-8 against BW since 2008, falling for the second year in a row to the Yellow Jackets
  • Zarow had at least 10 kills for the fifth consecutive match
  • 16 players appeared in the match for Case Western Reserve, including five first-year student-athletes

The Spartans will continue their four-match homestand on Friday when the team takes part in the annual CWRU Quad. Case Western Reserve will face Hiram at 6:30 p.m. before taking on Allegheny at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Colorado College at 2 p.m. later in the day.
