Men’s Soccer Prevails 2-1 Over Juniata

Behind a pair of goals late in the first half, the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated Juniata College 2-1 on Saturday evening at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.

The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 on the young campaign, while the Eagles dropped to 1-2-0 in 2026.

Stats and Standouts


  • Sophomores Gavin Trosch and Micah Rossen scored for CWRU with first-year Leo Miranda earning an assist
  • Rossen led the team with four shots, including three on goal, with Trosch and senior Cormac Apostolides adding three shots on goal each
  • Junior Ashton McNally added two shots for Case Western Reserve
  • Sophomore Carter Shedd played all 90 minutes in front of the net, making one save to earn his second win of the campaign
  • CWRU had a 15-7 edge in shots and 9-2 advantage in shots on goal in the game

First Half


  • After a quiet first nine minutes of play, the Eagles struck first, with Shawn Batory scoring just 10 minutes into the game
  • CWRU earned corner kicks in the 23rd and 28th minutes but were unable to get a shot off
  • Trosch took the first shot of the game for the Spartans in the 32nd minute with Rossen adding an attempt on goal following a corner kick a few minutes later
  • Trosch tied the score with just 1:08 left in the half, sending a ball into the box and receiving a helpful deflection off a Juniata defender
  • The goal was the first of his career
  • Just 30 seconds later, Apostolides attempted his second penalty kick in as many games
  • This one was saved by the goalkeeper Maxwell Mattioni, but Miranda found the ball, crossed it to Rossen, who finished in the empty net with just 35 seconds left in the half

Second Half


  • CWRU had three corner kicks within the first two minutes of the second half
  • Shedd made his only save of the day in the 59th minute, making a diving attempt on a shot by Tre Henry to preserve the Case Western Reserve edge
  • Mattioni made saves throughout the second half, keeping the Eagles in the contest despite a barrage of shots from the Spartans
  • Juniata had its last chance with under four minutes left on a corner kick, but the team could not get a shot on net
  • The Spartans maintained possession for the rest of the game, securing the win

  • The Spartans improved to 4-0-0 all-time against Juniata, winning last season and in 2007 and 2006
  • Defenders Alex Eby and Apostolides played all 90 minutes for CWRU
  • There were 20 fouls called in the contest with four yellow cards
  • The goal for Rossen was the third of his career
  • Miranda earned his first career assist in just his second collegiate game
