The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team recorded its first shutout of the season, defeating the College of Wooster 3-0 at Carl Dale Field in Wooster, Ohio, on Sunday evening.

The Spartans improved to 3-0-0 this season, while the Fighting Scots dropped to 1-1-0.

Stats and Standouts

• Sophomore Micah Rossen scored the team's third goal of the game and added an assist
• Sophomore Alex Eby and senior Ohta Kamiya also scored for CWRU in the first half
• In addition to playing 79 minutes on the back line, senior Philip Vlastaris contributed an assist
• Sophomore Carter Shedd and first-year Louis Markin combined for the shutout in front of the net with Shedd playing the first 83 minutes and Markin saving a shot in the final seven ticks
• Junior Ashton McNally led the squad with four shots, including two on goal, with Rossen adding three attempts
• Eby (83 minutes), Vlastaris (79 minutes), and seniors Cameron Thayer (83 minutes) and Cormac Apostolides (76 minutes) contributed to the shutout

First Half

• A pass was deflected off a Wooster defender to the feet of Eby, just outside the box on the far side of the field
• The sophomore went past a defender as he went toward the goal and fired a shot across the front of the net that found the near post, putting CWRU ahead 1-0 in the 18th minute of play
• Kamiya doubled the edge nine minutes later, scoring his first goal of the season midway through the half
• Rossen stole the ball in the attacking third and had a breakaway with Kamiya. He found the senior unmarked in the middle of the box, and Kamiya slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for the score
• The Spartans had five shots following the goal, including one on target, while the Fighting Scots only had one attempt for the remainder of the half

Second Half

• CWRU had three quick shots in the 56th minute, one that required a save and one that was blocked
• McNally put a ball on target in the 61st minute, and graduate student Saiheed Jah had his shot attempt blocked 10 minutes later after a corner kick
• Rossen put the game away with his second goal of the campaign in the 79th minute
• A free kick was sent into the box and headed into the air
• Vlastaris put his head on the ball, sending it toward the middle of the box and Rossen
• Rossen controlled the ball with his chest and sent a spinning shot past the goalkeeper for the third Spartan tally of the evening
• Vlastaris earned his first career assist on the play
• Wooster attacked aggressively in the final 10 minutes of play, earning four corner kicks and taking three shots near the end of the contest
• However, the visitors prevented them from scoring to preserve the shutout victory

Spartan Notes

• The Spartans were playing on the road for the first time this season
• CWRU improved to 12-19-5 all-time against Wooster and have not lost since 2005, going 10-0-1 against the Fighting Scots in the last 21 years
• Eby and Kamiya became the ninth and 10th different goalscorers for Case Western Reserve this season
• Rossen earned his team-leading second assist of the season in the game. He has recorded at least one point in every game this season
• This marked the second time in Rossen's career that he had a goal and an assist in the same game
• The Spartans had a 17-8 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in shots on goal during the game
• 28 members of the squad appeared in the victory
