Senior defender Kat Tsarouhas of Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team scored in the 80th minute to provide the Spartans with a 1-0 win over Heidelberg University on Tuesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans ended non-conference play with a record of 6-3-1, while the Student Princes fell to 3-6-0.
Stats and Standouts
- Tsarouhas scored her first goal of the season and just the second of her career
- All of her three team-leading shots were on goal
- She also played all 90 minutes of the game along with sophomore Mia Modrovich

First Half
- The Spartans threatened early, putting up two shots and a corner kick in the first five minutes of play
- Heidelberg made its first attempt of the contest in the 19th minute, which Palaian saved
- In the 33rd minute, Kenney had her first career shot saved
- Palaian made an impressive diving save just a few minutes later, keeping the game scoreless
- Junior Taylor Brackett nearly broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, shooting the ball from about 30 yards out that required a fingertip save
Second Half
- CWRU maintained strong possession early in the second period, putting two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of play after the break
- Heidelberg earned a corner kick and had a shot blocked
- The Spartans responded with a corner kick a few minutes later, resulting in a blocked shot by junior Kinzly Gootman and a saved shot by Tsarouhas
- Olivia McCluskey of Heidelberg hit the top post with a shot off a free kick in the 68th minute, nearly giving the visitors the lead midway through the stanza
- The hosts had a corner kick in the 79th minute which set up Tsarouhas's goal
- Junior Ashley Liang sent a cross in front of the net, which first-year Rachel Mathew headed toward the goal
- The ball hit the top post, ricocheted off a few players, and found the foot of the senior defender
- Tsarouhas fired an arcing left-footed strike from nearly 35 yards away, finding the back of the net to put the Spartans ahead with 10:25 remaining
- The Student Princes had one final attempt off a corner kick in the final four minutes of play but could not find the equalizer
Spartan Notes
- The Spartans improved to 7-0-1 against the Student Princes in the all-time series, which dates back to 1989
- Kenney made her collegiate debut in the game
- CWRU had a 15-5 edge in shots, 10-2 advantage in shots on goal, and 5-3 lead in corner kicks
- Case Western Reserve played at home for the first time in 17 days
- The goal was the third latest in a game this season for the Spartans
- CWRU recorded its second shutout in the last three games
